Bill was one of the best teachers I ever had. As well as his desire to see pupils learn, he was a brilliant scholar himself, as reflected by the many subjects he taught.
He was not a fan of the 'Soundings' Leaving Cert poetry anthology, but when it came to Gerald Manly Hopkins it was a master class from someone with such a depth of understanding of the poet and the poetry. He knew each and every stress and meter in every line of his poetry, and brought it alive to us students. I would love to hear a recording of him reading Hopkins.
