In Memory of Winnie Nolan. Thank you for being the best Grandmother anyone could have asked for. You are so missed.

Grandmother Time
She is a low, banked fire,
Like the one in her hearth.
Grown sleepy and ashen with time,
Most of her dulled with age.
But still burning, living on,
Eyes bright, tongue sharp, words scald.

She is the Oxford dictionary,
1920’s edition, on the mantle ledge.
Worn down with rough handling,
Spine bent and pages creased.
But full of an old knowledge,
Near lost, almost gone, precious.

She is the vintage piano
Crammed into the hallway.
Out of tune, a bit battered
But graceful in her aging.
Too good for her cramped quarters,
But solid, unmovable, in her space.

She is a widow, a watcher, a worrier.
A clergywoman, a caretaker, a child-rearer.
She is the angelus, three rosary beads,
The Wicklow Mountains, in black and white.
She is tea stains, and Christmas cake,
But no whiskey, never whiskey.


She is bent out of shape, but not broken,
Never broken, far too strong for that.
She moulds to fit each new shape
(New era, new language, new leadership).
Weathering time, waiting out death.
Well loved by her God.
