After a long & difficult illness which he faced with determination, patience, good humour (mostly!) & huge resilience Karl passed from this world. He is & always will be deeply loved by his wife Kay, children William, Kathryn (O’Regan) & Mark Waldron Hyden, and grandchildren Linda, Denis, Elaine. Missed by all, especially his son in law Diarmuid O’Regan, in laws Jane & Jim O’Regan & family & Mark’s partner Lauren Foley whose support, comfort were a source of joy and life. Linda, Denis & Elaine will always know their Papaw adored them & the joy they filled his heart with their squishy hugs & pure unconditional love poured into him gave his life new meaning, purpose & joy. He is mourned by his St Ann Family in Memphis & many friends in USA, Australia, UK, Italy & beyond.
Karl & Kay were married over 37 years after falling in love literally across a crowded room & eloping soon after. Love at first sight is real & though roadblocks came, getting over them made their love stronger. William, Kathryn, Hope & Mark, as well as the beloved grands & the beautiful spirits in the in-laws, friends & partners gave joy to their lives. Karl’s first love (apart from Kay) was music. He was Assistant Professor of Classical Guitar in Texas, but he found his true home in his ministry in St Anne Parish, Memphis, as Director of Worship. As a Musician, Composer, & Leader he directed Choral & Handbell Choirs & a Schola for more intricate pieces of music. There was always joy on his face & those of his choir members when directing the Hallelujah Chorus every Christmas. WOW! He trained Cantors, Lectors & Eucharistic Ministers. He established the Divine Mercy Chaplet who have never left his side in prayer.
Karl & Kay returned to Ireland as he wished for more educational opportunities for the children & he felt to be near Kay’s family offered more love for them. It was with regret he could not minister here but he was active on the Synergy Credit Union Committee, Primary School Parent Teacher Association, Youth Club Volunteer & served on the School Board of Management in Ballyhooly. Professionally, he retrained in HR/Coaching. Working initially in development, he set up his own business as Executive Coach/Mentor to help people achieve their potential in business/personal life. Karl received many awards & fellowships including: Master Coach (ICF), (a rare accolade awarded by The International Coaching Federation); Fellowships in the Chartered Institute of Personnel Directors (CIPD) & Irish Institute for Training & Development (IITD) along with many Global Awards for Excellence in Executive Coaching of CEOs. He lectured with IBEC, UCD Professional Academy & UCC & co-founded The Family Business Unit, Ireland. The hallmark of Karl’s work is his generosity never turning anyone away. Many said this was not a clever way of doing business, but Karl’s life was one of service & his response was always “Maybe not but it’s a good way of living”. This is the kind, beautiful man we were graced with as Husband, Father, Papaw, Uncle, In-Law & Friend. He poured love into us all & many we don’t know.
Karl we miss your gentle presence, unconditional love, wisdom & the love in your eyes, though you could be grumpy too! But we know you are always here, loving us & with us “all is as it ever was, only better. You’ve just gone around the corner, crossed that liminal threshold space & we will always be together forever.”
