Peacefully in the care of his loving family. A soulmate in music and all things to his cherished wife Úna (de Faoite) and a wonderful, treasured father to Úna, Niamh, Dónal, Fionnula, the late Máire, Lorcán, Séamus, Sorcha, Darach agus Íde. He will also be deeply missed and remembered with much love and affection by his extended family including his sons-in-law, Peadar, Herman, Luka and Séan, daughters-in-law Eibhlín, Emma and Ana, by all his grandchildren who he adored and was adored by in equal measure, by his loving brother Padraig, sister Bridget, his cousins Nancy and Michael, in-laws Paddy and Mary and his many nieces and nephews and his countless friends and companions in music and song.

Thinking of those who went before him and who will welcome him: John, Mary, Martin, Bríd, Rita, Jack, Jack, Larry, Finbar and Dan. A musician, singer, collector, composer, producer, and teacher, he was an important and essential figure in the revival and development of our wonderful traditional music. He is gone now to the great session at God's right hand.

In his roles with Conradh na Gaeilge and Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann he was a much-loved and admired figure who established teaching schools for traditional music and brought thousands to learn and love both traditional music and song, and amhránaíocht ar an seannós. He worked to found and develop some of the most important events in the world of traditional music, including the Fleadh Cheoil, Scoil Samhraidh Willie Clancy, Scoil Éigse, Fleadh Nua, Na Píobairí Uileann and more. He was also an important collector with thousands of priceless recordings in the Comhaltas Archives of famed musicians and singers, he produced albums of some of the greats of tradition including Tommy Peoples and Peadar O'Loughlin, and was instrumental in publishing seminal guides and collections on traditional singing, regional styles and more.
