 Joan Hickey
(née Curry)

Scorthreen, Borris, Carlow

It was hoped by now we would have had the opportunity to thank everyone in person and offer a memorial to give Joan the send-off she deserved.  We want to reach out and offer thanks to everyone who has helped Joan and our family in her final years and especially those who cared for her.

We consider ourselves very lucky to have had so much quality time that we can treasure immensely. We had opportunities to create new memories, make peace with her illness and say goodbye while leaving nothing unsaid.  The journey started in 2012 and even though this journey consisted of a lot of ups and downs, Joan’s positivity shined and her words were always, ‘I have lived a good life with great family and friends, we will get through this together and I will be looked after.’ This is exactly what happened.

We want to thank everyone for their help, offer gratitude to you all and from the bottom of our hearts let it be known how grateful we are for everything you have done and continue to do for our family.  GP Dr Byrne and Kathy, an invaluable team who go above and beyond. The fantastic employees at Goresbridge pharmacy and to the dedicated medical team in St Vincent’s Private hospital whose care was outstanding, compassionate and caring, together they gave her some extra precious years of life.

To all Joan’s friends, bridge partners and our neighbours who lined her path as she left Borris for the last time and are always just a call away, your continued support means everything to us.

To our wonderful, amazing and thoughtful family and friends both near and far, thank you does not seem fitting enough. We relied on you and treasured your help, from traveling on the train, driving her to appointments, sitting by her side, all the while working the invisible rota during hospital stays, visits to the house and the quiet words on the lane. Calls, texts, and care packages, they meant and the world, we are truly blessed.

During the end of her life, it was the carers, (the cancer night nurse and the home care team, both community team and palliative team) who worked hard and deserve thanks they are inspirational people who give so much to help others, a special mention for Liz and Eliz who went above and beyond their call of duty to offer the best possible care and comfort.

Lastly, we must offer sincere thanks and offer recognition to Imelda who cared for Joan in her final weeks and moments, who was by Joan’s side as she passed and ensured all her final wishes were in place.

Joan passed with her family beside her at home peacefully on the 26th April 2020.

Thank you, Jim, Gemma & JoAnne Hickey
