Ó Conaire, Breandán (Portmarnock, Co. Dublin) - July 21st 2025, peacefully at Swords Nursing Home, surrounded by his loving family. Breandán Ó Conaire, Port Mearnóg, Co. Bhaile Átha Cliath, imithe ar shlí na fírinne go suaimhneach i Swords Nursing Home, ar an 21ú Iúil 2025.

 

Beidh sé á thórramh i Stafford Funeral Home, Portmarnock, 23ú Iúil, ón 2.00i.n. go dtí 4.00i.n. Aistreofar a chorp ina dhiaidh sin go dtí Eaglais Naomh Áine Port Mearnóg. Léifear Aifreann na Sochraide (Déardaoin 24ú Iúil) ag 10 r.n. Cuirfear é i Reilig Fingal tar éis an Aifrinn.


Beloved father of Ciarán, Cormac, Aonghus and Aisling, and grandfather to his four grandchildren, Cillian, Daithí, Saoirse and Naoise. Devoted husband of the late Rhóda. Breandán will be deeply missed by his children, grandchildren, sister Ann, brothers Kevin and Francis, extended family, Marcela, Clodagh, Cathy and Will, friends, and former colleagues.

A man of immense talent and dedication, Breandán leaves behind a rich legacy. He was a distinguished President of the Irish Amateur Boxing Association (IABA), a testament to his lifelong passion for the sport and his unwavering commitment to its development. He also served as a respected member of the European and World Executives (AIBA) and was proudly inducted into the IABA Hall of Fame.

Breandán also had a highly respected academic career and retired as head of Roinn na Gaeilge (Irish Department) at Coláiste Phádraig (St. Patrick's College), Dublin City University (DCU) in 2007. His academic contributions were extensive, with a special interest in Irish literature, language, and cultural history, including 19th and 20th century Irish boxing history. He was also the Director of Comhdháil an Chraoibhín (the Douglas Hyde Conference) and Editor of its Proceedings from 1990–2002. His intellect, wit, and kindness touched all who knew him.

Reposing at Stafford's Funeral Home, Portmarnock on Wednesday 23rd July from 2pm-4pm.

Removal to St Anne's Church, Portmarnock for 10am Funeral Mass on Thursday 24th July followed by burial in Fingal Cemetery.
