Now and again I return to a photograph in The College Boys from 1950. And I see the spirit of a young Gene Clarke. And I am aware of another narrative of kindfulness and joie de vivre and charism (in the hard years after the war) he brought with him all his life long. His first funeral in Doobally was on 4th September 1963 and was my grandfather John O'Rourke, whose great-grand-son plays for Cork. Gene had an interest in detail in story and was an empathetic listener. Proud to have been a compadre and companero. Sincere sympathy to his family and all who were privileged to come to know this great Cavan sage.

God rest Fr Gene... Remembering Maureen & him in Doobally. Recalled this again on arrival there as PP (Ballinaglera, Newbridge, Doobally) Aug 1990. Met off & on around Cavan, especially on corridors of Cavan General Hospital when Priests were valued as Pastors of value to patients.
