Sincere sympathy to Theo's family on the passing of a great hurler and great person. Theo refereed most of the games in the famous Dunhill Senior Hurling Tournaments 1958/1963 and assisted our selection team when Dunhill won its first ever senior hurling championship in 1978. We all remember him in Dunhill GAA with great fondness and huge respect. May he rest in peace.

Greatness in Sport like all walks of life, is contrary to what people think or say, is desperately rare. It doesn’t sprinkle about like rain in November, It descends on a blessed few. Theo was one of those that it touched. I’m not old enough to remember him as a player but coming from South Tipperary and Malrlfield, there is no doubt about his greatness. Players from this part of the world weren’t considered hurlers.
I was privileged to know him albeit a little. It was one of life’s great pleasures to meet him.
We all thought he would live forever and in my head and heart he will.

I was born in 1967, the youngest of my family. My mother named me after her own father but it was often recounted to me how my siblings had fought hard for me to be called Theo, after the great midfield maestro. It says something about the impact his brilliance had on young minds at the other end of the county when there were many others in the Blue and Gold to compete for that status. I had a two-minute conversation with him at the banquet after the '89 All-Ireland. It was easy to see why the word 'gentleman' is cropping up so much on this page. I didn't know Theo personally but little did Theo know how much joy he along with others brought into my life following that great Tipperary team of the 60s. I can only describe Theo as one of the best midfielders to ever grace the blue and gold. May he rest in peace
