I’m 10 years older than Jimmy so have known him for all his life though much of my life was, and is, spent in England. My wife Liz and I enjoyed our trips to the Donkey or Harbour Browns on my visits home when Jim would have her in tears of laughter at some of his tales. We last saw him together at the Falmouth sea shanty festival in 2019 when he was in fine voice and I stayed with him in Cobh in the August of that year. I had no idea that would be the last time I would see him.
He and I share a grandmother and uncle, Bethanne & Padnan respectively from 26 Bishop Street.
Those who remember Padnan might also recognise some of his characteristics in Jimmy, who was one of the Top O’ The Hill’s great characters, and with much to offer - a musician, songwriter, storyteller, a touch of divilment but above all, a committed family man.
He was generous with his time and hospitality to friends and strangers alike and to the town he was immensely proud of.
We will miss you Jimmy and look forward to visiting you & Aileen when next I’m home.

Having just heard the sad news of Jimmy's passing. I wish to offer my condolence to all of Jimmy's family. I had the pleasure of working with Jimmy through the representative association PDFORRA. Jimmy was a deaccent honourable man who used his negation skills to further the pay and conditions of all members of the armed service, land and sea.

It is with the greatest sympathy that Ger and I want to pass on our deepest condolences. To Niall, Shane, Aoife, Dan, Mary, Lillian, Reggie, Jordan, Michael and Zoe. Jimmy was a character that had all the classic traits of a true legend in his own time. Despite his widespread notoriety, he was kind, thoughtful and for me a best friend for over 3 decades. Jimmy meant something to everybody. Cobh and the world will be a much lesser place without him. Wishing you fair winds and following seas my friend, the only consolation for us is that you are now reunited with your beloved Aileen. So may you both rest in peace together in the presence of the Angels that you Jim had so much faith in when you were here with us. If there is a bar in heaven and a sing song possible, we'll know where to find you!
