Aidan was one of the nicest people you could ever have met. He was one of life's gentle souls. In all the times I met with him, he never had a bad word to say about anyone. His quick wit and good humour were legendary and he was well liked by everyone who knew him.

When we were growing up, he'd frequently take us to Crumlin baths for a swim. He was great fun to be around, always playing games with us and trick-acting. Most importantly though, he always bought us ice-cream on the way home !

He was quite the exotic uncle too. Whenever he came home after one of his many trips abroad, he'd arrive bearing gifts....sculpted wooden heads from Africa, painted plates from Indonesia, carpets from Turkey and of course, the stuffed koala from Australia.

His love of anything marine was enormous. From tankers to tugs and ships to ferries, he was a treasure trove of informaiton.

Aidan will be sorely missed by everyone and his absence will be felt for a long time to come by his family, his friends, his neighbours and the wider Drimnagh community who were all hugely supportive of him.

He was the uncle you've always wanted to have.

I got to know Aidan very well from my walks around Drimnagh and we then learned that we had a family connection in that my sister Mary is married to Harry Phelan.
