It was a privilege to attend the wake and funeral Mass for Aidan - solas na bhflaitheas go raibh aige. The great turnout reflected the universal affection and respect in which he was held. And what a legacy he has left to us ! He will be sorely missed, not least his wonderful voice.I don't recall when I first met him but when I was tasked in 1997 with activating the MoU agreed by the Governments of Ireland and of Newfoundland, the first step I took was to arrange to meet Aidan who duly filled me in on all things Newfoundland, where he was immensely popular. He founded the St. John;s Folk Festival and the Irish Newfoundland Association and collected a treasure house of song and music, which he gifted to the Irish Tradit. ional Muusic Archive in Dublin. Deepest sympathy to his family.

Aidan and family became part of our lives when they set up home in Knocklyon in 1978. His knowledge of the Irish tradition, culture, language and diaspora both in Ireland and North America was astounding to say the least of it. His contribution to learning and Irish academia has enriched our heritage , our links with
Newfoundland and has given us an insight into who we really are. Both he and Joyce have been true and cherished friends throughout the years. So sad for you Joyce, Sean, Kathleen, Conor and Brian. Deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Aidan, whom we knew in Ballinteer. A broadcaster par excellence, Aidan’s beautifully modulated voice significantly enhanced his myriad broadcasts, and added to the pleasure we derived from them. We assure Joyce and the extended family of a constant remembrance of Aidan in our prayers, and we trust that the many happy memories of him will help to sustain them in the times ahead.
