I only came to know Ailish after my sculpture of The Púca ran into trouble in Ennystymon in 2021. Throughout the strange controversy she proved a champion of the arts and a scourge of folly. I came to know a few jornalists but Ailish was clearly of the old breed: undeferential, sceptical and curious, and quite happy to pick any fight that needed picking.
I remember her ringing out of the blue one evening, and how affronted she was at the self-defeating daftness of it all. Good as her word, she came out swinging with an article arguing that Ireland would do well to promote its culture as proudly as the Greeks do. That counterblast of common sense turned the tide, and led many months later to a fairy tale ending. And when the Púca finally got to strut his stuff in Co Clare that midsummer’s day, it was only right that Ailish was there to see it and it was my pleasure to finally meet my great ally. Irreverent to the last, she stayed over in Ennystymon!

I was so sorry to hear the news about Ailish's passing. I got to know her during our days as business reporters - bumping into each other at press conferences, social events and the occasional press trip.

She was a great woman - an inquiring and tenacious journalist, who had just the right amount of cynicism. Ailish was also such brilliant fun, and we had some memorable times during the years. I knew Ailish at the Irish Independent and although we worked in different areas, we got to know each other and often chatted. Louise was one of our contributors at the Farming Independent at the time. I was really sorry to hear of her death. Condolences to her parents, Louise and the O'Hora family on your loss. Deepest sympathy to the O'Hora family on the passing of Ailish who was a very good colleague to me in the Irish Independent (2006-13). She was always full
of stories and questions, particularly the latest in politics. If she got an incomplete answer, there would often be the “rolling of the eyes” that her family mentioned and then a joke. Mayo and Kiltimagh often got a mention too, she was very proud of her roots.

Ailish took time to talk to people and cared deeply about her work as a journalist. There was always a splash of colour and personality in her stories. Her report on the closure of the famous Golden Grille nightclub in Letterkenny described it as an” unofficial party headquarters” for Fianna Fáil and went on to add:
“Aside from its historical political role, it has also been credited with launching thousands of romances as one of the most popular entertainment spots in the North West.”

My sincere sympathies to Ailish’s family and her beloved mam and dad. Ailish was a character on the Independent.ie team, full of knowledge and wit. I was always hooked on her stories of newsrooms gone by and her travels worldwide. Gone from this world far too young. Rest in peace Ailish

Living in Phibsboro and Ailish was working in the Sunday Business Post. Never a dull moment and many a late night putting the world to right.
