I am so sorry and shocked to hear about the passing of Áine. I worked with Aine in Sudan and would count the days to her visits to Khartoum from the field. She was great fun and very supportive. Never a dull moment when Aine was around. RIP Aine you'll be missed.
I was part of the middle part of the Ottawa episode of Annette’s life. She was such a vibrant presence, with a determination to live fully despite life’s challenges. It’s hard to believe that she could succumb.
She loved my family of the time too, and was Auntie Annette. She helped us move in 1988, and really put her back into it. She was loving. She was consequent and principled. Her scope was global. She disappeared from my life for all intents and purposes over 20 years ago but I miss her.

I first met Áine through volunteer activities in Ottawa in the late 1980s. Her sense of humour was infectious. In the early 90s, she hired me to join a small NGO focused on HIV globally. It was a time when few in international development were giving any attention to the pandemic. We worked together for several years. There was rarely a dull moment.
Áine's dedication to the issues coupled with her drive and wry humour made it a special time in my career. She contributed so much to social justice and opportunity for marginalized voices in numerous countries. She will be missed.

Aine: You were my first love and i will never forget you. 💚
I hired Aine to work at the Canadian Co-operative Association in 1988 as our first Women in Development Officer, a role she excelled in. I came to know her as a wonderful, sensitive human being and to admire her as a strong feminist. My heart goes out to her friends and family.

I was so so sad to hear of the passing of Aine. She was a remarkable woman, so passionate about her work and especially gender equality. I had the honour to have worked with her over the years in Concern. She touched so many people with her kindness and also her sense of humour. Forever gone, never forgotten. May she RIP
I was very saddened indeed to hear of the passing of Áine. My deepest condolences to her family and friends across the world. I first met Áine at Kimmage as a dynamic director. But it was in Sudan where I got to know her well, when she joined the Concern team, spending extensive periods in the challenging Darfur context (and the heartbreaking situation now makes us think of the colleagues and communities there). Áine was an exceptionally committed individual - to human rights, gender equality, impactful programmes and treating colleagues and communities with care, dignity and respect. Despite such serious matters and being a 'mighty woman', Áine had a great sense of humour and we had lots of laughs along the way. I feel so blessed to have had her come into my life and humbled, but not surprised, to hear of the many others she has touched along the way. Robala ka khotso - rest in peace dear Áine.
Deepest sympathy to Aine’s extended family, may she rest in peace.
A wild woman wending her way in the midst of a storm - when was it ever different? Áine's wide lens on life never narrowed nor her passion wane for the sacred nature of all living things - and was graced with a rare courage and humour throughout. All gratitude to her family and friends for creating a ritual leave taking redolent of her true nature. Áine settled in the Railway Works Estate in Inchicore, and we were honoured to know her - Beir Bua

I have warm memories of her from my younger years, when I would be sent to my country cousins for summer holidays in Mountjuliet, and of her visits to the Oilmills. There was never a dull moment when Annette was around.

Even as a young girl, I knew Aine was a powerful woman. She was not afraid to stand out and to be seen in all of her passion, vibrancy, warmth and colour and I looked up to her for this. As I grew older, I learnt more about the courage and strength of her journey in all the hard work she did to support those most in need and my admiration for her only grew more. I have no doubt that wherever she is now, Aine is shining brightly as always, in her authentic, unique light. It was such a pleasure to know her.
My heart is with her family and those closest to her at this saddening time.

My condolences to the family. Aine was my aunt even though I’m not really part of the family. She helped to raise me when my mother was working and I’m forever grateful for the levity, the light and the love that she brought while she was in my life.
RIP Auntie

I am struck by grief by Aine's passing...too soon! We still had a Camino to walk and so many other projects. Aine was a fierce comrade in the struggle for women's rights, had one of the biggest hearts on earth, would send us into laughters till our bellies hurt...she was a great friend, proud person and went too soon...she will be dearly missed and I send all of my deepest sympathies to the whole family and her community of friends worldwide. Much love, xx

Fond memories of our neighbours the Costigan family when they lived in The Jocks and later at Station Road.
It is some years since I last met Annette when visiting Station Road at Christmas time. Loved listening to all her stories about her work and travels all over the world.
Rest in peace Annette now reunited with your parents, Johnny and Chrissie.

Helen, Adrian, Brendan and your families. The untimely loss of Aine is so sad for all our extended family. So many hilarious occasions were shared in Mt Juliet particularly in the 70s and 80s with many photographs to remember them by. Aine was at the heart of many of them always up for a laugh. So sad that she has been robbed of a long happy retirement after a working life of dedication to others around the world. May she rest in eternal peace.

Áine did women’s studies in the mid 1980’s, and from then on was advancing gender, development and women’s rights, working against violence and on protection efforts, including on HIV prevention and health response work for over 40 years. I got to know Áine as we joined on DTALK (Development Training and Learning, Kimmage) sessions and related health and HIV work back in Ireland with Dóchas members and others. Áine was my adviser and peer, a professional and a friend, always a joy to work with. Áine committed her life to “making the world a better place”. I am so sorry Áine did not get to enjoy a long retirement, as she deserved. Gone too soon. RIP Áine. Sincere condolences to all Áine’s family, friends and work colleagues.
