I knew Alan away there in the mid 1970s when he was a member of the rep company at the Half Moon Theatre, Alie Street in the East End. London, in those days, was his ' Manor ' and I would bump into him in a variety of venues; a pub on the Fulham Road, Ronnie Scot's in the West End for example. There were a few Jolly late night sessions at his flat in Parfit Street that will be always memerable. Thanks Al, it has been a privilage knowing you. Jim.
I am very sad to hear that Alan died on 13 May and pass my condolences to his family, and particularly Johnny, who I knew in the 70s in Dublin. Alan and his girlfriend Nora Connolly spent many a great evening in my flat in Waterloo Road, Dublin and I will remember him very fondly. My last sight of Alan was when I was sitting in a train in Dublin and he was on the platform trying to coax me off to go for a 'gargle'. Go n'eiridh an bothair leat, Alan. love Alison (McMahon), Leeds, UK
Alan Devlin - charmer, gentleman, entertainer (mad personable individual) - remember HMS Pinofore! Always made me smile even when he was grumpy, best to you Alan (please don't wreck the Angles!)
Goodbye Alan; life was never dull when you were around. Being onstage with you was unforgettable because something in you reached out to people and made them happy.
A true actor and a gentleman has gone to his eternal reward, we who remain are the sadder for his passing but brighter for his life.
alan, miss you like mad. love and big hugs! your godson richard. {son of john molloy}
So sorry to hear of Alan's passing. We have lovely happy memories and funny stories of the many evenings he spent here. Our sincere condolences to all his family.
dear John, and the girls and all the ones I have yet to meet, this is my number 0044 77 47462749 - to keep in touch for the future now that the past has hurtled into you all so heavily. Your loss of Alan and your mother in a week is a weight and if I can help in any way please text me. I loved Alan and he saved my life. For all the fun in him his heart was bigger, for all the drink and the stories his genius was greater; I have seen him act the greatest of actors off the stage and help the least and for all the noise his peace is with me now as I write and from the time I met him in 1977; my daughters send their love - his love his warmth to me and my children will stay. Forever.
Theatre has been robbed of one of the most compelling actors it has been my privilege to work with. My heartfelt condolences go to his family and to all his friends and colleagues who loved him and admired his brilliance.I feel so shocked at the news of his death and saddened that I will never see him again, on or off the stage,his true home.
