Alan Johnson

Very sad to hear of Alan’s passing. I got to know him as we were often the only two sharing the canteen in Gandon House during lockdown. During that time his health steadily deteriorated but his determination and inner strength increased. Despite his debilitating condition he continued to work and bravely confront his fate. Condolences to Mary, who supported him throughout his illness and I hope that in the days to come you will draw strength and comfort in the knowledge that the time spent together was rewarding and that he appreciated your devotion and dedication.

Alan was an amazing coach, mentor and friend to so many of us at kickboxing. He was always witty and kind. He nicknamed me 'ferocious' when I first started sparring because I was so timid but within a few months he had me living up to my nickname. He helped so many people reach their potential in kickboxing. He was always humble and respectful and never mentioned any of his previous wins or success. His fight against MND inspires so many. Condolances to Alan's wife, family and many friends.

I was fortunate enough to have the pleasure of getting to know Alan through kickboxing. I’ve yet to meet a person who comes close to him! what a selfless gentleman. He may not have known or refused to listen but he has helped and supported so many young martial artists who were lucky enough to trained with him. A great colleague full of knowledge and in latter years always at the end of the phone ready with the answers no matter how complex the query was.
