Alan Thomas

So sorry to hear of Alan's passing. My sympathy to all his family.

We were at KH together, in the same class for several subjects. Despite his short-sightedness, Alan liked to sit towards the back of the classroom, quietly keeping a low profile. Not so quiet at mealtime though, when conversations with the lads went from rugby to rowing and back to rugby again. Later we were both at Trinity, but despite Chemistry Dept and Dental School located close together, our paths didn't cross very often - then again, that was nowhere near Islandbridge!

We are also thinking of Alan’s brother Roger at this time and Roger’s wife Tanya. Alan was a dear friend to our club founder Brian Roberts and we think of Brian and Brigid Roberts at this time also. I was so shocked when John Burgess called me to tell me about Alan, Pauline, I am so sorry. please give my love to your family. Where do you start with Alan Thomas ? He was the person we all aspired to be, he was exceptional at everything he did, I spent many wonderful years rowing with him, and after KH, Alan was one of only four people I kept in touch with from that time. He came to Donegal, first on his own and then with Pauline, the last time I saw Alan was when I was in Cork for a few days and he and Pauline came to dinner at John and Joan’s. He was such an easy person to be around. He had a quiet confidence and knew who he was and of course there’s that infectious smile. with much love, Malcolm McClay, New Orleans

We are all very sad in our house to hear of the death of Alan, and we extend our sincere sympathy to his lovely Pauline and all his family.
We had such great times travelling to so many rowing events with Alan and enjoying the successes of his amazing and dedicated coaching. His generosity with his time and his utmost integrity throughout, were second to none.

So very sorry to hear about Alan’s passing, taken far too early. Deepest condolences to Pauline, Sam, Hannah and Emma, and to Roger, on their enormous loss.

We were in the same year in KH, and like so many of our group, I too have very fond memories of Alan. Popular, positive, intelligent, thoughtful, any group was enhanced by his presence. He had a great sense of humour, a deep sense of humility, was universally liked and respected in equal measure.

A great sportsman, rugby “team player” and rowing colossus, he contributed much to building the sport in KH.
