Although it has to be over 60 years since I would have last encountered Alex, his photograph evokes the same image I recall of his childhod - the smile! The young Alex always seemed to have a smile as if he appreciated his good fortune to have all the island's historic buildings to explore in the pre-ESB era, such scope for fishing whether by rod or net, not to mention the wonderful deciduous trees on Leslie's adjoining wood in a remote corner of which Alex and his brothers had constructed a wonderful treehouse which was off-limits for us 'townies' and, in our minds, elevated each of them to the equivalent status of Tarzan and his confreres whose exploits we had looked at agog in several films. Lovely to see his smile remained unwavering from childhood to senior citizen .
