Condolences to all the McCartins on their untimely loss. Alex was a character and will be much missed.
After reading all the comments I regret not spending time with him and his family. My prayers are with his family.
So saddened that Alex has passed. He was a breath of fresh air & although he was just over 70 he had the spirit of a nineteen year old.I was lucky to have befriended him in the hills & that was his home from home.
For the most part there were no heavy serious conversations with Alex.It was light, funny, teasing & sporty. The only time he bragged was rightfully about Michelle & his girls.
Every single hike with Alex & friends started politely & jovial but as the peak would approach Alex would distract us & dart off.He would usually summit first & tease us all for being slow & to “take the brakes off lads”.He never slipped or fell & was born to run the trails.
His bright clothes were only matched by his bright personality & he’ll be sorely missed by us all in the Cooleys.
God bless Alex,you were a one off🙏

Very sad news to hear about Alex’s passing. We had some great days together in the Ballymac enjoying the tennis and relaxing with a drink afterwards.

He was very proud of his family and talked about them with such fondness and pride. Sincere condolences to Michelle, the three girls and all the family. Rest In Peace Alex, you will be truly missed.

Devastated by the passing of my Uncle Alec of whom I have so many fond memories. He was so kind to me over the years and took me on many adventures golfing at Warrenpoint and Greenore. I will never forget him calling at our house in Banbridge to take me for a spin in his new motors. When departing he would spin the wheels and doot the horn coming out of our driveway. He will be sorely missed by all our family. My thoughts are with Aunty Michelle, Niamh, Aideen and Emma. May the King of the mountain Rest In Peace.
Our deepest condolences to Niamh, Martin and all of the McCartan family. RIP Alex. 🙏

Alex was a true gentleman. He brightened the day of all who met him, young and old, with his stories and good humour.
He loved the mountains and with his sense of fun reminded everyone he was “ number one”, as he surely was.
Alex truly had a heart of gold and he will be sadly missed by me , and all the family especially my boys Kevin and Patrick who always enjoyed the craic and banter when they ran together. RIP

Alex will be missed by many. He had a heart of gold. His love of mountain running and all the fun that went with it will live long in the memory. I was so fond of him. Rest well Superman.
This is surreal, I can’t believe he is gone. I heard about the charismatic Alec long before I ever met him. Twice he took me on runs in the Mournes which could only be described as epic! It was something I always looked forward to (and dreaded) every time we visited Ireland. He and Michelle were gracious hosts whenever we visited.
I hope the sadness Michelle and family is feeling will, in time, be replaced by happy memories of Alec and that smiles and laughter will accompany those thoughts!
Suzy will always remember Alec as her wonderful, eccentric cousin who always treated her like her best Irish big brother.
RIP Alec you are missed.

So so sorry to learn of Alex’s sad passing . He was a true gentleman and a pleasure to have known him I got to know Alex from golfing in Greenore Golf Club and also meeting him on numerous occasions on the mountain you could spot those pink shorts a mile away . May his gentle soul rest in peace .
Alex, a force of nature! Full of energy, unstoppable, and unforgettable.
Alex had legendary status at the Ballymac, regular jousting sessions of slagging, leg pulling, and his entertaining stories would brighten any day. Great tennis player and all round sportsman. Sincere condolences to his wife and family.

Please know Michelle that our thoughts and prayers are with you and the girls at your untimely loss of Alex.
My deepest condolences to Alec’s beautiful family.
He was such a kind and generous gentleman who I had the pleasure of spending countless hours roaming the hills with.
We were compatibly odd, in the sense that if we saw anyone approaching on the mountain, we would change direction in case we might have to talk to them. And also, I didn’t want them to see those luminous pink shorts.
I feel a huge sense of loss with Alec’s passing and will always feel his beautiful presence.
And to Michelle, thank you so much for the lovely hospitality you’ve shown me anytime I’ve come to visit.

Uncle Alex…. You brought a smile to all your nieces and nephews faces all your life. Though we are heartbroken not to see that handsome face again we will smile and laugh through tears as we remember and speak every day the funny sayings and jokes that are intertwined into all our lives (ones many don’t even realise came from him!)
We will miss your impromptu visits to mum and dad’s where you brought half the Shellborne bakery with you! You brightened up a room and many lives.
Thinking of Aunty Michelle, Niamh, Aideen and Emma (his girls) RIP Uncle Alex ❤️

I’ve had the immense pleasure and privilege of knowing Alex for many years as we were very good friends and shared many happy and funny memories in Ballymac leisure centre. He was the most dedicated man to his fitness and well being. We talked often of his wife and family of which was, rightly, very proud. On meeting Alex he would turn a bad day into a very positive one and leave you feeling elated. I’m gutted that I cannot be at the funeral but he will certainly get heaven rocking and rolling. Sleep well old friend.
To the Family of Alex, i am truly sorry for your loss , Alex was a gentleman to his fingertips and his famous Pink Shorts of course , he will will be sorely missed by all who loved him, liked him and those that ever meet him , may you get through the next few days recalling happier times you all spent together, Alex onwards and upwards RIP 🌻 🌻 🌻
