I was a pupil at the Henry Mellish Grammar School, Nottingham, where Allan taught Maths from 1957 until 1962 when he left to go to Huish's Grammar School, Taunton, Somerset. At HMGS he was I think well-liked but respected - not a man to mess with! His nickname was, inevitably, 'Paddy'. He got me through O-Level Maths! He was also responsible for introducing hockey to the school, as coach and (at fixtures) as umpire. After 60 years I remember him well and with affection. May he rest in peace and rise in glory.
(See also https://hmgs.home.blog/staff/; as well as the entry in the biographical section, he appears at the bottom of the page in the staff pictures extracted from the 1958 and 1961 school panoramic photographs.)

Very sorry to hear of Allan's passing: I have so many fond memories of him: The time he encouraged the Bible Union in High School not to multiple meetings, as the salt needed to be out of the saltshaker, his meticulous approach to the Bible, yes the details do matter, and his unflagging enthusiasm to see young and not so young people equipped for Christian service: He was an outstanding example of life-long commitment to Christ and I am so very thankful for his instruction and influence: May his memory continue to inspire us all to "run the race" set before us.
— Hugh D Morrison
I am writing on behalf of The High School community to offer my sincere condolences following the death of Allan. I should like to extend our deepest sympathies to Jane as well as to members of the immediate and extended family.

We recall with gratitude and affection the significant and substantial contribution that Allan made to the development of The High School during his lengthy tenure as Headmaster between 1971 and 1994. His commitment to the life of the school before, during, and after his appointment to that role was remarkable. We have reason to be thankful that Allan chose to dedicate a significant proportion of his professional life to this institution where he is remembered as a principled leader of the highest integrity. We remain grateful for his kind and caring example in engaging with the generations of staff, parents, and past pupils who mourn his loss to The High School community.

It will undoubtedly be a very difficult and painful time for his family, friends, and colleagues both now and in the immediate future. However, you may be assured that we will continue to keep all of you in our thoughts and prayers at The High School whilst wishing you every strength and comfort during the months and years ahead.
— Mr G A Forrest, Principal, The High School
We were very sorry to hear of Allan's passing but we know Jane and family, that Allan will be on the 'Way of holiness' Isaiah 35.8 in the presence of Jesus. Our boys appreciated Allan so much in High School.

On his very first day as HSD headmaster
Allan Brook addressed the school. After a minute of his address he stopped and barked “ Harris. Will you stop talking!” It was a brilliant piece of theatre. How did he know names on his first day? He immediately had our respect.
A very fair and decent man.

Dear Jane, i am so saddened to hear of your loss. We know it is to Allan’s gain. I will always be thankful for your love and support of me as a student in Dublin. I also hold very dearly the memory, when I was studying at what would become IbI, of Allan weeping with wonder as he taught of God’s wonderful plan of salvation through the Old Testament. That was life directing.
May you and the family know God’s good comfort as you wait patiently for the call to join him.
Much love , Caroline and Paul xx

We have many happy memories of Allan. A person who loved the Book, and was not afraid to teach what the Bible said. He was also an encourager. From time to time I would share with Allan, different experiences I had when teaching in School, and by his responses, I knew that he was as excited as I was. Our prayers are with Jane, and the rest of the family scattered in different places.

Jane and all the Brook family, my sincerest condolences on the death of Allan. I was so saddened to hear this news.

Allan was nothing short of a legend to generations of students involved with the Christian Union in TCD and elsewhere. For 70 years his strong connection to, and support of, the CU was experienced by countless CU committees. I will never forget his kindness, encouragement, and of course, hospitality. He was so incredibly generous (along with Jane) in hosting many CU Committees for their annual planning weekend away ahead of the next academic year. His total commitment to, partnership with, and love for Jane was so evident, and something we as students always noted and admired when staying at his home.

He most certainly "fought the good fight ... finished the race ... kept the faith".
