So sorry to hear of Declan's passing. Always a friendly smile or a chat on Threadneedle Road before or after his daily swim. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam.
I got to know and become very fond of Declan from winter swimming in Blackrock.Like a lot of Cork people he was utterly modest and endearing to a fault.Small wonder that so many past engineering students scattered around the world speak now so fondly of him on his passing. His family must be very heartened by such warm and effusive praise for this highly accomplished academic who lived such a kind and worthwhile life.Put simply he was special and will be missed by those of us lucky enough to have known him.Forse Adesso Patrai

Sincere sympathies to Róisín and the O’Keefe family on Prof. O’ Keefe’s sad passing.
I did not have the pleasure of knowing Declan personally, but heard many wonderful stories over the years of knowing Roisin. We are a fair share of our parents, and if Roisin is anything to go by, he must have been a witty and brilliant mind. My deepest sympathies to the whole O’Keeffe family.
My sincere condoleances to all the family...I have never met Declan, I am proud to say that his son, Donall is one of my dearest friends and now, after reading all these messages about Declan, I can only say 'Like father, like son'..Be strong, Donall..I am thinking of you!
Sincere sympathy to Angela and all the family. Years ago, when we could all walk the prom we would always have a chat . May he rest in peace .
An tOllamh Deaglan was a brilliant inspirational man and he was an outstanding role model for his pupils.

Few people have contributed more to the development of the engineering profession in Ireland and this is part of his legacy. He had a great love of the Irish language and through his lectures in Irish during Seactain na Gaeilge he inspired many of his students in the promotion of our native language.

We were indeed fortunate to have studied under such a man.

May he rest in peace.
My sincere sympathy to Angela and all the O'Keeffe family on the passing of Declan! A member of the UCG 1966 B.E. class, my first formal academic appointment, in 1969, was under Declan's direction. Although I moved out of his department about six years later, I remained a colleague of his until his retirement. Working for and with Declan was never dull! A strong and enthusiastic personality, he greatly enhanced the academic standard and reputation of civil engineering education at UCG. Known to staff and students alike as John Dec, there were students who referred to him (with a curious mixture of affection and terror) simply as GOD! His annual Easter tours abroad for the Final Year BE Class became legendary. At reunions, former students still fondly recall comical situations and bizarre incidents that occurred on those tours. Outside of academic life, Declan was witty, charming, well read, widely travelled and highly educated! He was certainly a hard act to follow! On retirement, he became a regular swimmer out in Blackrock and he loved a walk on the prom. Declan left his mark on the lives of many! He will be sorely missed by his family and friends.
Sincere sympathy to the O'Keeffe Family. Professor O'Keeffe, was a very kind, and proud Corkman. RIP
Deepest Sympathy to Donall ,Doireann and all the O'Keefe Family on your sad loss. May he Rest In Peace.

He was a real gentleman and was of great help to me in my career and personal life. I have very fond memories of him. I will never forget the help and advice he gave me when I needed it. May He Rest in Peace.
May he Rest in Peace.
Our sincere sympathies to Angela and the O'Keeffe family on the passing of Declan.

He had an outstanding academic career and he was a key driving force behind the growth of Engineering at Galway for over thirty years. When he retired, there was no doubt that the BE degree in Civil Engineering at Galway was one of the strongest Engineering degrees in Ireland.
Sincere condolences to the O'Keeffe family for their loss. Professor O'Keeffe was one of life's gentlemen who always had time to stop for a chat with any of his graduates he met while out walking on The Prom. I had the privilege of getting to know him a bit better when assisting him in organising the class tour to Amsterdam in January 1987. He was so full of energy and enthusiasm and outside of the formal setting of the lecture hall, he was always one for a bit of banter and craic and made one feel at ease. May he Rest In Peace
My deepest sympathy to Angela, Una, Donall and Roisin. Over five decades, Declan gave extraordinary service to the University as Registrar, Professor of Civil Engineering and in many other capacities. Ni bheidh a leitheid aris ann.
Since sympathy to Una and the Ó Caoimh family on the passing of your father. May he rest in peace.
My heartfelt sympathy to Angela, Donal Sile amd Roisin, his gramdchildren and all that were blessed to know him on the passing of Declan, i was always told such wonderful storues about him from Lorraine, may his gentle soul in rest in peace
Sincere sympathies to the O'Keeffe family on the passing of JD. From a student perspective, Professor O'Keeffe was stern but fair, knowledgeable as the position demanded, passionate on the subject matter, and a great leader of the faculty. His swimming was renowned, even appearing spontaneously on an RTE interview a few years back. His light burned brightly on this earth, as I'm sure it will burn brightly in the afterlife. RIP.
Comhbhrón le Angela agus a clann .Ní maith linn bhur dtrioblóid.Suaimhneas síoraí go raibh ag Déaglán .
Comhbhrón ó chroí le Angela agus le do clann uilig ar bhás Déaglán. Fear uasal, cineálta, díograsach, agus léachtóir den scoth.
I had the privilege of working closely with Professor O'Keefe in organising our Class tour to Paris in 1975. He put so much work into it and of course for us it was an unforgettable, once in a lifetime event but for him, it was a yearly chore.
On another occasion back then I remember raising a complaint with him, that our course was too theoretical and that we weren't doing enough to prepare us for the practical challenges we would face in the workplace. He quietly but confidently responded that we were being challenged to develop our thought process and how to problem solve. He said that these skills would serve us not just back then but for the rest of our lives. And of course he was right, for in a fast changing world, we had to be able to adapt and change and remain relevant on a continuous basis ever since.
In later years, I occasionally met him at social or other functions and what struck me was his great respect not only for me as an individual but also all my classmates. He had such a personal interest in all the things (not just engineering) that we were involved in. His humility shone like a beacon, for here was a man who had done and achieved great things, praising one who had achieved little.
Suaimhneas síoraí dhuit a Ollaimh.
My deepest sympathies to Mrs O’Keeffe, and all of Professor O’Keeffe’s family on his death. I was privileged to have been lectured by Professor O’Keeffe in my Civil Engineering days. He had the great gift of being able to simplify the most complex of topics, which enabled him to be an outstanding and passionate Engineering educator of his time. I will always have fond memories of Professor O’Keeffe.
Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam dhílis.
Deepest condolences to Angela and family on Declan’s death. May his good soul rest in peace. An inspirational leader in the University.
Sincere sympathy to all the O'Keeffe family.
Declan was a very decent honourable reflective, and kind man. I was privileged to know him as the lead in Student Services at NUIG and as a swimmer at Blackrock. Job done Rest in peace

Deepest sympathy to Angela and all the family. We are thinking of you at this time. Declan and Angela were among the first people we met when we came to Galway 50 years ago, and we have many happy memories of Declan. May he rest in peace.
Sincere sympathy to Una and the O’Keeffe family on the passing of your Dad.
Deepest sympathy to the O'Keefe family on the sad passing of John Declan!
We are so sorry to learn of Professor O’Keeffe’s death.
John Dec was a great guy who helped so many of us get over the hurdles of exams and practicals. And it was not just about academics – he was always available for social events – could always be relied upon to belt out “The Bould Thady Quill” when he got the noble call.
Fifty years ago, this month he brought our whole class to Paris for a wonderful week of engineering marvels and endless laughs and fun.
He impacted all our lives in the most profound way. We are eternally grateful for his teaching – but also his positivity and enthusiasm and his unfailing encouragement when times were tough.
