Anthony (Tony) Paul Hourihan

Dear Claudia, we were so very sad to hear of Anthony’s passing. We have such fond memories of being with you both in Vienna. Please accept our heartfelt condolences.

I was deeply saddened to learn of Anthony's death. He was truly one of a kind. I had the great privilege of knowing him from a young age, and the added privilege of attending a series of his lectures at university as a young adult - his sage advice, dispensed so freely during his much-anticipated final lecture, is still quoted among friends. He will be greatly missed and fondly remembered, most particularly for his huge generosity and unique personality. My sincere condolences to his family.

Five years at UCD, sharing work and moments with Tony--though it wasn't a long time, we were not just colleagues but also good friends. I still remember the joyful times we had at the annual UCD Christmas gatherings. May Tony rest in peace.

I first met my cousin Tony in the summer of 1972 when I went to work in his mother’s shop, Colette Modes, in Dublin. I can still picture those days so clearly: the hum of the city, the elegance of the shop, and his quiet intelligence that always shone through.

I remember going to Bewley’s to get him a flask of coffee — a small errand, yet it has stayed with me all these years. It reminds me of his warmth, his good humour, and that thoughtful, engaging way he had with people.

He was a man of great education and depth, but also of kindness and grace. I will always remember him with affection and respect.
