Tony Russell was an Educator of substance and a man of vision that left Waterford a proud legacy in the first class College of Saint Pauls.

So sorry to hear of Mr Russell’s passing. He was the principal in St Paul’s when I attended there. He made the school a great school at the time you would not want to be sent to his office for misbehaving lol he was good and fair with the students. Condolences to his family and friends at this sad time. RIP Mr Russell.

I first encountered Mr Russell in St Paul’s in 1981 at the entrance exam coming from St Paul’s Primary school. We all thought Mr Dowling was scary but Anthony took it to a new level.
He watched us all coming in and leaving the assembly hall that day, which gave me goosebumps back as an 11 year old.
Fast forward all the way through from 1st year to leaving cert, he had one defining character about him, He was tough but fair. His gaze could give you solice or the fear of God in one stare.
Thankfully I was not in his office that many times but when I was, it was like, I wish he would say something and stop staring. We knew we ware in big trouble if we were summoned to Mr Russell or Mr Hartery’s office.
However, St Paul’s back then and now is a very progressive sports college and he enjoyed the successes that in hindsight, He engineered because he had a vision going forward.
We probably didn’t appreciate it at the time, but I for one thank Him and the muinteoirs that coached us and readied us for the years beyond second level college.
His values, professionalism and foresight were unmatched, bringing a new college in Waterford to such a high standard.
It was good to meet my school buddy Robert Russell, today but unfortunately I had to leave early.

It is to Tony's credit that St. Paul's became such an excellent and popular school . He was a pioneer in so many ways: a broad curriculum, co-education and he was responsible for instilling a deep sense of pride and identity among students , staff and parents. St. Paul's was indeed a 'community college ' and the fact that he is remembered so fondly after all of these years by so many is a testament to the man. He ran a good school and he was always supportive .

He was a gentleman and I remember him fondly from years ago in Lismore park when I attended college in Waterford and then at Christmas time in castleconnell where he enjoyed a glass of whiskey and a good chat. May Mr Russell rest in peace, back in 79 to 83 he was so ahead of his time. I really enjoyed my four years in St Pauls and Tony built a school to be proud of, later we had many chats as he was a customer at our Maxol station at Collins Avenue, I used to hold on to his dog as he shopped inside, simple memories but nice, condolences to Mary, Catherine and all of Tonys extended family.
