Prof Curran operated on me in May and was fantastic in every respect. I was truly shocked by his tragic and premature passing. I have since spoken to others in the medical world who knew him, and I now I realise exactly how lucky I was to have been under his care. I think of him and his family at regular intervals. My best wishes to his entire family.
RIP Prof. Curran

I was so very sad to learn of the passing of Aongus. I had the pleasure of meeting and getting to know my cousin when he stayed in the US during the summers of '84 & '85. He was a funny, smart and compassionate guy and I loved getting to know him. We had a lot of fun and I am so sorry for this devastating loss. You are all in my thoughts and prayers. I had always hoped to visit Ireland one day and I always knew I would look up Aongus. Rest in peace.

I would like to offer my condolences to the Curran family at this sad time. Professor Aongus looked after me some years ago when I needed surgery. He was a terrific doctor and a lovely person. Ar dheis Dé go raibh sé.
Sincere Sympathy to Noreen, Maura, Laurence and extended family. Thinking of you at this sad time. May Aongus Rest In Peace, Amen.
I can’t imagine him still, because he was always on the go. A double skip up the steps and a lively twinkle in his eye. Walls or doors didn’t contain his clear voice; how could they contain his unapologetic determination?

I do not trust anyone else to operate on my head and always felt safe under Prof Curran’s care. He never made me feel like a patient and always fit me in; we were in cahoots, working through the difficult landscape together. I was so grateful that he never gave up on me, even though I have never been able to quite lick this condition. His lively intelligence cut to the chase, drawing diagrams, getting results, while gently steering away from dangerous zones that he described as “papyrus-like”.

We chatted about his accomplished, colourful watercolours, and he even encouraged me to pursue that love of painting myself. Our paths crossed for medical reasons, but I have learned so much more from Prof Curran. It is no coincidence that he was a teacher – sharing his love of knowledge and of life. Hover above the banality and “walk on air against your better judgement”.

“When I came back from Lyonnesse
With magic in my eyes,
All marked with mute surmise
My radiance rare and fathomless,
When I came back from Lyonnesse
With magic in my eyes!”
(Thomas Hardy)
At times such as this life just doesn't make any sense. This is such a loss to the world of medicine and to all the people who could have benefitted from the care and talent of Aongus. At least there is another bright star in the sky tonight - small comfort to those who loved him and to those who will miss out on his medical expertise, but his talent will live on in those he mentored and with who he so generously shared his knowledge.
Our thoughts and prayers are now with Prof Curran's family at this sad time.

We are devastated to hear of the tragic passing of Prof Curran. A absolutely wonderful, passionate and remarkable Doctor. Prof Curran looked after my daughter when she was 15 and needed an operation quickly. Years later she would train as a nurse in St Vincents and when he discovered she was a past patient he allowed her to scrub in on complicated operations and always had a smile for her. He also looked after my elderly father in recent years.

He is a huge huge loss to St Vincents Hospital and to Ireland. He is simply irreplaceable. May he rest in Peace.
I wish to offer my deepest sympathy on the tragic loss of a wonderful human being and professional who helped both myself and my son greatly last year. Rest in Peace.
