Very sorry to hear about Arthur's passing. Many memories of working nights with him in The Irish Times.
I first encountered Arthur on the 'graveyard shift' in the Irish Times in Fleet Street in the 1980s. He was funny, well read and helpful, always willing to share his wide experience with one who was starting out in the trade. He taught me a great deal.
RIP Arthur a fantastic man with great stories and he will be missed by us all in the DMYC.
I met Arthur as a boy in the 80s as he needed extra hands packing and mailing the Irish Skipper from his office in Landsdown Road. I sailed and toiled (!) with Arthur aboard Gulliver around the Irish, English and French coasts for many years with him, punctuated by endless hours scrubbing decks and boat bottoms under his regime (complete with tea and biscuits!).
These years of hard labor gave me the confidence to join Asgard II for many an on-and-off season trips, and ultimately to pursue a professional career at sea.
Humor aside (which, in my experience with Arthur was impossible), I often look back on these happy times and am forever grateful for the wonderful teaching, fun and wisdom afforded to me by this generous man. He taught me to use a halyard and a hammer, the value of a pound and of a friendship. I would not be the man or father that I am without his influence.
Thank you Arthur, for everything. I will sail/cruise on in your memory.
