Sincere sympathy to Brendan , Vincent and Judith on Austin ‘s sad passing . May his gentle soul rest in peace.
My condolences to Austin’s family. I was a colleague of his at De La Salle Churchtown many years ago and remember him well - he was a dedicated teacher and a true gentleman. May he now rest in peace with the Lord of Love.
A great contributor to De La Salle Churchtown.

He never taught me, but I did know him through his involvement in rugby in the school.

A keen golfer and rugby fan, he had a quick wit and a sharp tongue if required.

Austin is a legend in De La Salle Churchtown.

RIP Austin.
I would like to pass on my deepest sympathy to the family on Austin’s death. Fond memories of Austin’s time as Secretary of the Secondary Teachers’ Golf Society, and enjoyed many pleasant days in his company. May he rest in peace.

It was with sadness that I heard of Mr Quirke's passing.
He taught us French and English in the 90s. He taught us a lot more than that though.
He was a creator of thinkers, philosophers and debaters. It was quite a feat to convince a bunch of hormonal, teenage boys to care about war poetry, French film or novels like The Old Man and The Sea. But I can still hear him quoting texts and arguing with us from his perch. And oh how we loved to argue with him! But no one enjoyed it more than he did.
He introduced us to ideas like social justice and Amnesty International. We only only had to mutter about the death penalty and we knew we would have him pontificating about the right to life and wouldn't have to do any work for the rest of the class! I learned far more though during those sessions and developed as a person during my time with him than from any book.
He took the time to bring us to the theatre and the cinema. He organised guest speakers from all walks of life. We got a chance to listen to recovering addicts from the AA and the governor of Mt Joy. We got to debate with socialist politicians. And we were well able to debate, having learned from one of the best!
He would regale us with stories of his time in France and of his beloved mother. We hung on his every word as he described when he had a heart attack and was subsequently offered a shave in the recovery ward by an attractive nurse!
He may have passed on but the memories for many will remain.
Rest in Peace Mr Quirke

I remember Austin with great fondness , a great teacher coach and mentor. On one occasion at rugby practice Austin was wearing contact lenses in place of his glasses and one got displaced - he had quite bad eyesight and we all ended on hands and knees seeing could we find it - never did .
Anyway he moved to DS which was Belvos lose and DS gain .
Condolences to all his family and friends - may he rest in peace. You only remember the good ones.

Austin taught me English and French in the 90s in De La Salle. A decent man with a strong sense of social justice. RIP.
Sorry to hear this, I liked him a lot. I had him for Inter Cert English from 85-89, I remember on Friday’s in first year he’d read out loud books that weren’t on the syllabus he thought we’d like - Catcher in the Rye sticks in my mind. He’d always look up and give us little head nod and smile when he read out a bit he especially liked. The teachers that stick in my mind were the ones that really seemed to love what they were doing, Mr. Quirke was definitely one of them.
My sincere sympathy to Austin’s family. Austin was my French teacher in Belvedere in the 70s and I used to meet him occasionally in the 80s & 90s in De La Salle Palmerston. He was a very good rugby coach. RIP

He served our Diocesan Pilgrimage to Lourdes so faithfully for many years, mainly as a teacher, guide and mentor to the De la Salle Boys, but also as a steward at ceremonies and a very affable presence with the pilgrimage. Past Pupil
Sincere Condolences to Austin's family on their loss. I was a student in DLSC 93-99 and Austin left quite an impression on me in my formative teenage years.

He was a thought provoking teacher, not to mention an excellent rugby coach (ahead of his time). Most importantly of all, he was a good man who instilled self belief in his students and looked after the welfare of us all far more than any teachers job specification could require.

Rest in Peace.
