BARRY O'BRIEN

My heartfelt condolences to all the O'Brien family on Barry's sad passing, especially Michael (classmate and Scouts). I remember Barry with great fondness - a large presence, a great teacher, always encouraging, occasionally bringing us back down to earth. He always wanted the best for his students.
May he rest in peace.

Condolences to the O’Brien family, especially Michael who was a classmate for 6 years. Barry was a great teacher who taught science in his own unique way. I was never going to pursue a career in science but one of my best decisions was to study chemistry under Barry’s tutelage for the leaving. My best memories of Barry though are the days in Carrignavar and the then Cork RTC representing Hammies in athletics.

SINCERE CONDOLENCES TO ALL BARRY'S FAMILY

My sincere sympathies to Barrys family and the extended families on Barrys passing. I remember one of his science classes in particular. He demonstrated to us how to make Bakelite and went on to tell us that it was impervious. Years later in a technical situation I was able to use the information to my advantage. It was then, i truly appreciated "the strength of his teaching ". May Barry now rest in eternal peace

Beannacht Dé leat, a Bharry. Like many others of his former colleagues and pupils in the Ardscoil in Bandon, I will miss Barry's genial and
generous presence and his helping hand so willingly extended to all.
On top of his excellent teaching, Barry guided many promising young
athletes; and he helped several others towards a fulfilling career as
Cadets in our Irish Defence Forces.

Looking at the photo of Barry reminds me of how he laughed when us first year science students reacted when we smelt Amonia for the first time or when he would willingly demonstrate the use of the bunsen burner when splitting a bic pen, always dramatic and over pronounced but for me fair and engaged. Loved those qualities of his and echoed by my brothers.
Sad to hear of his passing but left his own mark on people who were lucky enough to meet him.

So sad to read about Barry’s passing. I can honestly say that no other teacher had such a profound impact on my formative years. I was far from a star chemistry student, but Barry was patient, sarcastic and encouraging in perfect measures. His career guidance and help put me on a path that I will be eternally grateful for.

1968. First year in Hammies and first day in the science lab. Barry stands on the rostrum at the top of the lab, takes a big drag on his cigarette, inhales deepely and says theatrically through a cloud of smoke...."lads, ye are the cream of the country.... (we all feel chuffed with ourselves)....rich and thick" (back down to earth!!) That was the start of 6 engaging years being taught by him and really saddened to hear of his passing. My condolences to all his family
