So sorry to hear of the death of Benny. We met for the first time when we arrived in Templemore in December, 1964. Benny was a fine man who served his country with honour and dignity. I was so so saddened to hear of the sudden passing of Ben, an absolute GENTLEMAN. I will never forget arriving in Portlaoise Garda Station as a young Garda miles away from home and then I met the wonderful Ben Thornton. Ben was so kind and we had that special Mayo connection. Ben was a reserved gentleman but when he walked into a room his presence was so powerful, he lit up that room with his kindness, charm and charisma. Norrie, Alan and Lorena I am thinking of you all at this very sad time. Norrie, I will never forget how kind you and Ben were to me. Rest in Peace to an AMAZING man - Ben💙

One of my favourite things at Mayo games down the years was bumping into Bennie. He was great company and such a warm person I always felt better having met him whatever the result !

It won’t be the same without him but on his, Eddie’s and my Dad Martin’s behalf we’ll keep the Green and Red flag flying !
