We never worked directly with each other, knowing each other primarily through Bill Doyle our mutual friend and close colleague. In 2007, two years after my retirement, I had the privilege of working on an assignment with Berni. She was a highly intelligent, kind, perceptive woman.

My heartfelt condolences to the entire Smith family on the untimely and devastating passing of Berni. I had the privilege of calling Berni a friend, having first met her over 20 years ago through Lisa, Liz and Mary, the trio who, along with Berni, were affectionately known as “the Cloves.”

Although our paths rarely crossed professionally in AIB, we enjoyed many social occasions over the years. I remember with great fondness the wild nights out in Dublin in the earlier days, and later the much calmer evenings gathered around Lisa’s kitchen island, chatting about our latest book discoveries or debating the merits of rewatching our favourite TV shows. All with a glass of wine in hand!

Berni’s passing leaves a huge void, and she will be deeply missed by all those whose lives she touched. I am so grateful to have seen her shortly before her passing and to hear her reminiscing with Lisa and Liz about their many trips abroad. She was a beautiful strong person, a loyal friend and a devoted daughter, sister and aunt.

I hope that in time the pain of her loss will ease, while the many beautiful memories of her will remain forever.
