I knew I wanted to be a teacher at a really young age and follow my aunty Bernadette’s footsteps. It wasn’t that I just wanted the same career as her I wanted to be the same type of teacher as her. To teach through kindness, always listen and never judge. She was always picking up things for children that couldn’t afford what they needed and worked at the same school for so many years as she felt she was making a difference. She was, anyone taught by her was lucky.
Out of all Bernadette’s nieces I would say I’m the most like her because of our shared love of teaching, reading and shopping but in reality I think they might all say the same about themselves, that’s because we all want to see ourselves like her. She is the purest soul that we could all benefit from being more like.

Heartfelt condolences ,to hear of the sad passing of Bernadette, to her dear Mum Teresa ,who I connected with through my late Grandma O Rourke Leitrim, Gerrard & all Bernadette’s siblings & extended family, what a beautiful lady , so caring I can imagine her students blessed to have her as a teacher, so gentle in her ways , once in town gifts chosen for all the nieces & nephews & their families too so thoughtful .
I was sad to learn of her dear passing , I was always delighted to see you with Mum when ud come to my place & later on with Gerrard when he was home

Bernie holds a very special place in my heart. I worked alongside her as I embarked on the first few years of my teaching career. She was a great mentor and graciously offered her wisdom, experience and support to me. She was such a dedicated, hardworking and caring teacher. The children she taught were privileged to have had her as their teacher in St Malachy’s and I feel privileged to have known her.
