Part 1/2

Uncle Bernard

I am truly heartbroken at the passing of my beloved Uncle Bernard.

Funny , diligent , dignified, ever present, helpful and kind - he was one of a kind.

Ironically he will be buried on Christmas eve morning - because Christmas for us was made by Bernard.

Early on the day he would arrive in Claddagh Green to take the order from my mother Mabel - who sadly passed away this year at 93 - he would also cast his DIY eye over Claddagh Green - assessing what had to be fixed - he even made the star for the top of our Christmas tree - or more importantly wallpapering.

As we ascended the wooden mountain that night to await the arrival of Santa, Bernard would stumble in with the turkey under one arm, his stepladder draped over his shoulder, clutching wallpapers tools and tables!

We’d arrive down the stair on Christmas morning to our new Santa presents and a new house!

Bernard had wallpapered into the early hours.

On St. Stephen’s day we made our traditional trip to Aunty Monicas and Uncle Bernards in Rafters road in Drimnagh for our annual feast of food, singing and fun - our childhood efforts at poetry and performance were diligently recorded by Bernard on his state of the art reel to reel tape recorder - and they still exist.
Part 2/2

Bernard was the glue across our extended family . When our believed Aunty Patsi was getting married to Stephen, the wedding breakfast was held in Nana Murphy’s house in Kylemore Drive, Ballyfermot - guess who made the banqueting table which stretched the length of Nanak Garden - Bernard.

He loved music, I vividly remember his upset in 1964 when his hero singer Jim Reeves was prematurely killed in a plane crash.

Bernard never drank or smoke, a unique role model for us.

Sundays were highlighted by the arrival of Uncle Bernard, Aunty Monica, their children Lucia, Regina and Brenda (who sadly passed away too soon at this time of year also) in the Austin A40, we piled in and 4 adults, and up to 8 children headed off to Poulaphouca, The Curragh or Donnellys hollow for a summer picnic.

The fan belt in the A40 would inevitably snap under the strain of the passengers and unless a pair of tights could be procured from the laughing passengers Bernard would head off in complete darkened across the Curragh for an open garage.
I know his family loved him deeply and appreciated his uniqueness - as he loved all.

Bernard had a great faith, quietly held, daily lived. If God needs a right hand man, Bernard is on his way for in truth there is only place he is destined, deserved and appropriate for a living saint, Heaven.

From his adoring and heartbroken nephew , Joseph.
So saddened to hear of Bernard's passing, thinking of you all at this sad and difficult time. May Bernard rest in peace
