I met Bill Kavanagh in London in the late 80's while working as a student in a practice near Ladbrook Grove. We were the two Irish people in the office, and on the receiving end of quite a bit of "banter", which would be considered wholly inappropriate these days, however we gave as good as we got. Bill often lobbing in well aimed comments in his typical affable way, that went under the radar, and were all the more enjoyable for that. I have an abiding memory of an incident where the very plummy office secretary suspected she was missing something, and took her revenge one day when Bill asked her for some 2H pencils. She made him stand in the middle of the office and demanded he pronounce the "atch" before she would give him the pencils. Bill went along with it with a wink to the room and very comically kept repeating "HHHAAAAAch" in as flat a Kilkenny accent as he could, until her face got redder and redder and she handed them to him. He sauntered off with a "top o' the mornin' to ye".
He was very kind, in addition to his great sense of fun and his many other talents and skills.
I am very sorry to hear of his passing, at so young an age, and give my deepest sympathies to Bill's wife and girls, and to his mother, extended family, and his wide circle of friends.
