Billy (William) Byrne

Billy and I were classmates at school in St. Michael’s, and we became great friends when we formed a band together. He was a fantastic guitarist, but just as importantly, he was great company and full of fun.

Although we lost touch for a while, we reconnected a few years ago. He told me how happy he was in Canada and how much joy he found in family life. He mentioned he was still playing guitar but “stuck at an intermediate level,” which I never believed for a second.

I was shocked and deeply saddened to hear of his passing. I always thought we’d have the chance to play together again or simply catch up.

One of the funniest people I knew, with a dry wit he barely seemed to notice himself. We played in a band together and I joined his Beatles Appreciation Society at school. Those were great days, and I’ll always remember the humour and music he brought to life.

Billy ‘the Axe Man’ Byrne, rocker, founding member of the Beatles Appreciation Society, and one of the few lads to look cool in a leather jacket in secondary school. Very happy to have known you and to have spent those too few years growing up with you. You were a wizard on the guitar. Rest in peace.

My sincere and deepest condolences on the passing of Billy. I am shocked to hear this news. Billy and I were good friends in St Michael’s and I remember him as such a genuine person who loved a laugh and (often times) skitting about. He always brightened up the day but you had to be on your toes to avoid his wicked sense of humour! However the jibes were always in jest, as Billy was, quite naturally, very thoughtful and considerate of others. I will never forget my good friend Billy. I learned a lot from him about life.

I only just heard that Billy passed away and am so heartbroken for Lisa, his beautiful boys, Oisin & Raffy and for his extended family. I shared a house with Billy in London in the mid 1990’s. We remained friends for years and am so sorry we lost touch in recent times.

Deepest condolences to Davy, Paul, Dmitri, Nicol, Elise and Niamh, and to all the Byrne family here in Ireland, Sydney and in Canada on the heartbreaking loss of Billy.

Billy will always be remembered. The warmth, laughter and light he brought to so many lives will continue to live on through all who loved him. Thinking especially of his family in Canada and of you all at home during this incredibly sad time. Sending love and strength to you all.

I had the absolute pleasure of meeting Billy in Ireland and then getting to enjoy his amazing company in Australia in the late 1990s. Billy was one of a kind, he was such a fun and entertaining person to be around. As well as that he was a decent and kind person.
