I became to know late Bishop O Riordan when I worked as a volunteer for the Catholic Mission from 1986 - 1989.
I remeber him very well as a caring Priest and Bishop. I feelt always very comfortable during our meetings or visits to his residence.
I will remember him in my prayers. May his soul rest in peace

It is very sad to hear about the death of Bishop John O’Riordan, Retired Bishop of Kenema Diocese. My heart goes out in grief to his family and the religious community that gave him to us. As our parish priest in the 1970s, he frequented my school in Gbado, an outstations of the Blama Parish. He and the other priests were our sole opportunity of hearing Mass. As a small boy, running after the van he drove into our village to deliver supplies for school meals, stationery, garden tools or a football was fun; but those supplies were a great source of sustenance for our disadvantaged community.
There is much to remember about Bishop John O’Riordan, including how his still small voice was one of the loudest in defense of the poor and vulnerable during our civil war. For me, as I type this in New York (faraway from the time and environment in which I met him); I cannot help but be grateful for the sacrifices that he made, along with all the others (including Frs. Patrick Walsh, Redmond Walsh, Jack Nugent and the bearded Dermot Egan [known to all as “Fada Kpehwah” – Fr. Big Beard], to bring the Word of God to us. I am reminded by my colleagues, most of them Muslims, that the education system these brave men established and maintained have been uplifting and made us responsible citizens.
I mourn the death Bishop O’Riordan but thank God and celebrate his life - for living selflessly so we might thrive. I join others in praying that his soul will rest perfect in peace. Amen!
