My sincerest sympathies to the family of John Joe and to the Christian Brothers. John Joe and I were in community together in James' Street CBS Dublin from 1958-1961.
I have happy memories of John Joe from those early days in James' Street. He was always a friendly, courteous gentleman in community and devoted to his work in St. Michael's Primary School, Inchicore.
Go bhfaighe sé leaba i measc na naomh.

Sincere condolences to all who is close to the Brother. A great poultry man and judge. Rest in peace
Now a teacher myself, I was a pupil at Drimnagh Castle in the 80's while Br. Linnane was principal. He ran a school with high expectations for mainly working class kids and it stood me well in life. I was terrified of him but on the one occasion I had direct dealings with him (needing to go home sick), he was extremely kind. Seeing him care for his poultry and later learning of his work in Zambia reinforced that impression. May he know eternal joy with God. And may Ireland and its education system not forget what he stood for: hard work, self-control, ambition, and compassion.
Sincere sympathy to all who mourn the passing of Bro. John Joe. We first got to know him over thirty five years ago, through our mutual interest in " Rare Breeds" poultry. He spent many a short break here in West Cork with us over the years and it was always an immense pleasure to host him. His wit and words of wisdom and encouragement will long live on with our family. Even when we visited him in Baldoyle in recent years he always had a keen interest in their lives.
Rest in peace, and thanks for the memories

Such sad news. Ive many fond memories of Drimnagh Castle while Br. Linnane was Principal.
He was a great man, insightful, funny, compassionate and the sharpest of tacks.
The talks we had and the advice he gave me have stayed with me and made more and more sense the older I got.
God bless. Thoughts and prayers to your family and friends during this time.

Sincere sympathy to Br Linnane's family and to the Christian Brother community on his sad passing. Fond memories of his Irish classes and his love of the language which he shared so generously with his students. On a personal level, he gave of his time and his dedication was not confined to the classroom. He would seek you out in the yard and do a 'cleachtadh' for the oral Irish while supervising the rest of the lads. He was good-humoured and kind. Ar dheis Dé go raibh sé-tá sé thar a bheith tuillte aige.
Sincere condolences on the passing of Br. John Joe. Fond and happy memories for our school days in Fanore N.S. R.I. P.

Just want to say what a great man brother linnane was to me. I wasnt always the easiest child in drimnagh castle but thanks to him i stayed in school and owe a lot to him. I learned a lot from him and the world is a lesser place without him in it a true gentleman
A silent warrior for the good fight . Brother Linnane was a gentleman . Had everybody’s respect when he entered a room . Was only thinking of him the other day and his little bits of knowledge and confidence he installed in every child who passed through his school.

Sincere sympathy to the Linnane family and all John Joe's friends in Ireland and Zambia. I had the pleasure of living with him in 1977/78. He always kind and helpful and worked very hard getting the new school off the ground. May he be rewarded in heaven. Sorry I can't attend his funeral for health reasons. Rest in Peace.
Fear nach raibh ard ab ea an Bráthair John Joe ach rinne sé cion fathaigh in Éirinn agus san Afraic. Bhí pearsantacht álainn aige agus bhí meas air ag daoine is ag sicíní. Tá mé cinnte go mbeidh meas air freisin sna Flaithis.
To Pakie and all the family, I am truly sorry to hear about John Joe’s passing. He spent 2 weeks with us here in Perth back in 2001 and he certainly left his mark. What a kind, witty, giving, humble gentleman. An absolute legend. We loved getting his letters from Zambia and the odd email over the years. Rest in peace now my friend and cousin.
Ni bheidh a leithead aris ann, we shall not see his like again.
One of the better ones who aimed to make us better men.
God Bless and safe journey Brother Lionnain.

Sorry to read of the death of Br Linnane, my principal when I taught in Drimnagh Castle for many years. He was a man of quiet competance and a joyful Christianity who made a huge contribution to education. RIP.
Saddened to hear of the passing of “the boss” Br Linnane. Tough, but fair.
I was delighted to move to Naas in ‘81 and to do my Leaving Cert cycle at CBS. Fondest of memories. Excellent school. Proud to have sent my son there (class of 2019 graduate).
He’d a challenge in transitioning school from “Ancien régime” into modern times. And I think he made great efforts to set that in train.
Sincere condolences to family and friends. May he rest in peace.

Sorry to hear of Brother Linnane's passing. A man of wit , humour and compassion. He epitomised Drimnagh Castle Secondary School for many years as its principal. He was a gentle, kindly and witty presence to both the students and staff.
sincere sympathy to Pakie Travor and the linnane family on the passing of John joe may he rest in peace.
So sorry to hear of the passing of Br. Linanne. I have very fond memories of him as principal of Drimnagh Castle when I was there from 83-88. On leaving school he furnished us all with incredible references as it was his desire to see us all shine with the polish of his unique leadership style; such was deep fatherly concern for us all. I have thought of him often through the years and had the privilege of meeting him again ten years ago when my son was preparing for an immersion trip to Zambia with Naas CBS and of course his kindly demeanor continued to shine through. I deeply value the great mentoring he offered me when I studied for my HDip in the castle in 92. His like will not be seen again. May his gentle soul, through the mercy of God, rest in eternal peace.
So sad to hear of the passing of “The Boss,” a great teacher and leader, a Headmaster who shared his Faith and belief in hard work, responsibility and respect with me and so many of my classmates. And no doubt with thousands of other boys, now men. I loved his passion for the Irish language and culture. Special memories of how The Boss managed that Ceilidh in the Gaeltacht and I am sure so many others …
Go raibh leaba ag John Joe I measc na naomh. He was a teacher, a mentor, a confrere and a friend to me.
Sorry to hear the passing of Brother Linnane. I was lucky to see his great work in Mazabuka, may he rest in peace.

Cuireann scéal a bháis brón orainn ar fad. Sincere sympathy to all Br Linnane’s family and to the Christian Brothers at this sad time. Br Linnane was a visionary leader of Meánscoil Iognáid Rís (Naas CBS) from 1977 to 1983. He left a lasting legacy and had a remarkable and lasting influence on us all, both students and staff. Later on, he was a wonderful host to our students and staff who travelled to Mazabuka on our immersion trips. Always welcoming, encouraging and generous, he was a true scholar, agus bhí a líofacht sa Ghaeilge that barr ar fad. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam uasal.

My sympathies to the Linnane family and fellow Christian Brothers on the sad passing of Bro Linnane. He was indeed a lovely caring and empathetic man much admired by all of us who worked with him in Drimnagh Castle. His entire life was devoted to the education of thousands of young boys both here in Ireland and in Zambia. He sought little praise for his work but we recognise the lasting legacy of his achievements. RIP

As a former pupil of CBS Naas, I have the greatest respect and regard for both the person of Brother Linnane and his many achievements. May God reward you in abundance. RIP.
Sympathies to friends and family. Bro Linnane made my secondary school days a period in my life that I look back on with great fondness. He epitomised values that he passed on to me and my class group in CBS Naas and have remained with me to today.
Br Linnane was a good kind teacher and Principal to all of us in Drimnagh Castle and his mini poultry farm was a great attraction to us students
He was known to us as “the boss”. This was during Br. Linnane’s tenure as principal in CBS Naas. He built a new school and throughout he was a an absolute gentleman - tough but fair. He left an indelible mark on all of us who passed through the halls of Meanscoil Iognáid Rís. His legacy continues as our children attend the same school with the same ethos he upheld. My sincere sympathy to the “boss’s” family on this sad occasion. It must be a source of solace and pride to you all to have had such a great educator within your midst. Ar dheis De go raibh a anam uasal.

I was very sorry to hear of John Joe. He was a lovely man who commanded affection and respect in his role as principal of Drimnagh Castle. A fellow Clareman, I met him while I was teaching in the Castle primary school. My pupils and I were fascinated by his collection of exotic poultry. More recently I met him during the early stages of the Covid pandemic and ever the science teacher he explained that he was trying to produce an industrial strength alcohol in order to make his ownhome made hand sanitiser.
