Breda was one of those rare breed of people who make you feel good about yourself and the world after an encounter with themAs a next door neighbour in our early years and later a more distant neighbour I have known Breda for nigh on 70 years and in all that time I cannot recall her ever being anything but good humoured
Breda radiated the sort of fundamental decency that is not easily described in English but which has a name in Yiddish Mensch which literally means person but figuratively something more profound
A mensch is not necessarily a saint or scholar but someone whose friends agree is someone to be admired and emulated, someone with dignity and a sense of what is right, responsible and decorous
someone who makes others feel good about themselves
In the Eastern European culture this was the highest compliment that could be accorded
Yes indeed Breda was a mensch and our lives are the poorer for her passing

I am sorry to hear of Breda's passing. I was a neighbor of hers almost 20 years ago. I rented a in Meaney 's a few doors down. I had few lovely coffees and cakes from Breda having done a bit of gardening or cleaned the windows. Having finished in UCC I took up a teaching post in Ennis and this is where I am now living with a young family. I called to Breda a couple of times in recent years and we had a great catch up.
