I have great memories of Ms Maher from my student days in St. Vincent's Lisnagry. Ms. Maher was such a genuine wholesome lady who imparted her knowledge and nursing skills with ease and she was always so practical. My deepest sympathy to Eileen, Anne, Denis, nieces, nephews and friends on the sad passing of Breda. I worked with Breda for many years in the 1990s as a tutor in St Vincents, Lisnagry. She was a great colleague, mentor, confidant and friend. She was an absolute pleasure to work with. Her compassion and kindness shown to students and all was beautiful to experience. She was meticulous with her work, and nothing was any bother to her. She was professional, thorough, organised, practical and a great leader. She always had the person/individual at the core of all her lectures. During Breda’s teaching career, nurse education moved from certificate to diploma, and degree level and Breda embraced these changes with enthusiasm and commitment – always ensuring that kindness and compassion to the person remained core values within nursing care.
Breda had a great sense of fun, and we shared many great times together. She remained my friend throughout the years. It was always lovely catching up with Breda. During the last few years, it was beautiful to see how Breda was loved and so well cared for by her beloved sister, Eileen. Breda experienced the compassionate care, that she always spoke about, from Eileen – and as Eileen always said - Breda deserved it.

I was saddened to learn of the death of Ms Maher. I was a student in Lisnagry, the class of '94, under the wonderful guidance of Ms Maher. She instilled in me a true sense of the values of the nursing profession and imparted her knowledge effortlessly and enthusiastically, the like of which we will not see again.
