It was with great sadness that I became aware of the death of Breda. Among her many qualities, she was a wonderful family friend. A very supportive relationship developed over the years between the very elegant Breda and my mother, the late May O'Riordan.

As a labour ward manager, I always felt very safe when Dr O Kelly was on duty - she could manage any emergency and I felt confident in reassuring the women that they would be comfortable once she had inserted their epidural. Her style brightened up the day/night. She was very generous and would regularly arrive with treats for us when she was on call. She loved the chats & it was obvious she enjoyed spending time with her family in particular her nieces & nephews. She worked very hard and was very professional and I’m sorry that she didn’t get to enjoy the retirement she deserved.

I extend my deepest sympathy and most heartfelt condolences to all of her family and friends at this tender time.

Breda was my most excellent friend. She was unbelievably astute, discrete, fun, generous, loyal, poised, and wise. Everything about her was always exceptional. Everything she did, she did well and with immense grace and elegance.

The first time she visited me in St. John’s, she arrived at the airport looking fresh and stylish and carrying one small piece of luggage. Once we reached our home, this one suitcase was immediately opened. With typical kindness and thoughtfulness, half her suitcase was packed with my favorite Chocolate Kimberly biscuits. Amazingly her only hand luggage was a stunning Waterford crystal vase, also a gift.

I chose not to try to imagine what a loss this is for her beloved family and our small circle of classmates. I cannot go there yet.

Instead, I am focusing on her wise advice to love my sons, live in the now, and drink in the beauty all around us.

Breda always had an extraordinary eye for beauty, and immense charm and she never wasted a second of her exceptionally well-lived life.
