Very sad to hear the passing of Brendan. A brilliant lecturer with such a passion for what he thought and helping his students. I always was in awe of how brilliantly his mind worked and how selfless he was. A true gentleman. RIP Brendan

The news of Brendan's death saddens me. I met Brendan during my year abroad at Galway University in the 1980s. I have plenty of memories of listening to music together, cooking together, playing cards and in particular of an unforgettable day trip to Inishmore. When we spontaneously decided to pick him up for the trip at his flat in the centre of Galway that morning, he said in his humorous way that it was still the middle of the night (I can still hear him saying that), only to then happily join our small group of three. I feel privileged to have met him. My sincere sympathy to his wife, family, relatives, and friends.

I offer my deepest sympathies to the McCann family. Brendan was a wonderful teacher and true gentleman.

He was a most warm and passionate person, and highly regarded as a serious and capable academic but, more importantly, as a good friend and colleague. I wish to offer my sincere condolences to the wife, children, and extended family of Dr Brendan, whom I have known since our time at NUIG, now the University of Galway. He was an exceptionally gifted mathematician and a very measured, friendly, open, and honest human being. He was always wonderful to converse with and a cherished student friend, and later, a respected colleague within the mathematical community.

Brendan was a lovely, insightful, and very kind man who will be remembered for his great intellect and his deep compassion for others and for humanity.

I was very saddened to learn of Brendan's passing. I met him when I came to Galway in 1986. We had both studied as Würzburg, were teaching at UCG and shared a house in Laurel Park for a year. We played Brendan's piano a good bit, Brendan mainly Mozart sonatas. I hadn't met Brendan for decades but have vivid memories of a trip to Inismore, walking along the cliffs from Dun Aengus to the Black Fort in brilliant sunshine. Brendan was always witty as well as kind and had a rich fund of stories. My sincere condolences to his family and many friends on their great loss.

To Brendan's family I offer my deepest condolences on his passing. We were colleagues for a couple of years in the Department of Mathematics in UCG, before he moved to Waterford. I met him in September 2017 on a visit to Waterford where we had a very enjoyable meal. He was always very cheerful in manner. He was a very gifted Mathematician. Such a sad loss.

I am so sorry for your loss. I had the pleasure of sharing a bus journey with Brendan last December where we caught up after the recent death of my dad (his former colleague, Michael). On the journey Brendan spoke so highly of his children and their achievements. It was always a joy to bump into him, he would undoubtedly be full of chat and enthusiasm for life. His skill with maths was a true gift and he practiced what he preached, cycling often in the name of the environment. A great man.
