In the early 80s, the Bank of Ireland would call over to our place of work every Thursday afternoon, with a lorry load of cash.
They would then proceed to construct what would nowadays be referred to as a "pop-up" bank.
And, their timing, as always, would be impeccable ; business would commence just as we were finishing our lunch break.
The banking process was simplicity itself ; they handed out crisp, green, Irish punts, in exchange for a slip of white paper called a cheque. Beats going to college any day!
My earliest recollections of this wondrous bank are of Brendan O'Boyle and Dave Barry "manning the fort"; stamping all our bank forms with a quick word on the local inter-firm GAA scene. And then, a cheerful, "see you again", "see you next time".
I had long since forgotten those far-off, halcyon days, when a bank would actually call out to your workplace, during your extended lunch-break to pay your salary. I had forgotten all that, until I chanced upon the Month's mind photo of a guy called........Brendan O'Boyle. Oh! Must be someone else. But I was wrong.
Sincere condolences then to the family of the man who encashed our very first pay-cheques all those years ago.
