So sad to hear about Brendan’s death. I know a deep and wide hole has been left in your lives and in your hearts. As so many have observed he was a lovely man. Though I didn’t know him well, whenever I saw him he was both interesting and interested. I still remember well his visit to Canada some nearly 20 years ago for a trip to the Rockies and the engaging way he talked to me about Irish history when I was there around 2016 and Betty and he drove me down to Navan. The pictures you chose for the obituary here and on his casket really captured the man I knew. Thinking of you all at this most difficult time. With heartfelt condolences Siobhan and Family.

All our thoughts are with Betty, Paul, Lorraine, Kathryn, Grainne, Ashling and the whole Smith family at this very difficult time. We count ourselves beyond fortunate to have had Brendan as such a kind, supportive and joyful presence in our lives. Betty and Brendan taught us the true meaning of 'community spirit'. No words can do justice to the extent of our gratitude for their contribution to our childhood. We will forever cherish the precious memories filled with friendship and laughter that we've had the privilege to share with the Smith family. Our second dad Brendan will always remain in our hearts.

I was privileged to have known Brendan for over twenty years as a walking companion in the Brothers of the Lug. We did very many walks together over those years , many times just the two of us,and he was a kindly, entertaining ,and wonderful companion on the hills. I have so many happy memories of our walks together ,when his sense of humour and mischievousness were always to the fore . A lovely man, and a wonderful companion, we shared great times together on our regular walks in the Wicklow hills or along the canal , enjoying nature and talking about everything. We also shared a number of happy hiking trips abroad. From my very first meeting with Brendan I found him to be most genial, warm and welcoming . He was a kindly man, with a devilish sense of humour, who was always so optimistic, so good humoured and so resilient, despite all the health trials that life threw at him. I shall miss Brendan, and he leaves a big void in many peoples lives. One of the best, who was a good and sincere friend. It was a privilege to have known him.
