Brian's family was his world. RIP Brian

Brian was the grandest of grand men. Our sons have been friends since Nursery. He was very knowledgeable and loved to pass on his knowledge and to tell stories. A favourite story was his grandmother hiding De Valera and the Black and Tans coming looking for him. Then there was his huge, kind heart. Nothing was too much trouble if he was able to help in some way. He had a marvellous sense of humour and you could not encounter Brian without coming away with that warm feeling of hearty laughter and that everything was better. He was always smiling his wonderful smile.

How remarkable Brian was shone through Neil and Cara at his funeral. Neil revealed yet another wonderful aspect of Brian: he did not want his children to be as good as him, but better than him. What selflessness! Cara spoke of how her father would refer to the film Finding Nemo and tell his children in the face of adversity to “just keep swimming”.

It was always apparent how devoted Brian was to Jean. He proposed using the world-famous neon Coca Cola advert at Piccadilly Circus, the only man ever to achieve this. What a man! They called their home heaven and all who visited could see why: a home of love, kindness and laughter. I will very dearly miss Brian. I cannot believe he is no longer on this earth, but he will live on in Jean, Neil and Cara and in the very many whose lives he touched. We are all be bereft without Brian. He is saying: ”just keep swimming”.

Brian was my first manager 30 years ago when I started my career in I.T. Under his mentoring, leadership and example I developed rapidly. He was instrumental in finding a way for me to study for my first degree part time whilst working in his team. I worked for him for almost seven years and learnt a lot. He was extremely knowledgeable and fair. Although a private man, He spoke often of Jean and it was no surprise when he got married. Brian loved rugby and not much happened once Ireland were playing. I feel saddened to learn that Brian has passed but I feel blessed that he was so influential in my young life. I will always value his gentle guidance and his contribution to my life. May God bless what meant more to him than anything and that is Jean and his two children. Family is what Brian was about and remained so to the end. God bless you Brian and may you rest in perfect peace content that the precious gift of a wife and children saw the best in you. I will never forget you.

I consider myself deeply fortunate to have met the wonderful Brian on many a happy visit to the Foley household from my earliest boyhood days, when Neil and I would get up to all sorts of mischief together under the gentle charge of Jean. I always looked up to Neil’s titan of a dad with his glorious sense of humour and fun, his powerful gravitas, formidable intellect and absolute, active devotion to his beloved family. In later years I realised he was everything I felt a man should be, and plenty more besides.

Brian had an effortless cool and an abundance of talent in so many fields. It was, for example, through his strong musicality that I became acquainted with the twelve-string guitar, an instrument which I fell in love with immediately upon strumming my first chord on the Foleys’ landing, and shall forever associate with this magical man any time I hear its sweet notes singing in the wind, however distant.

Above all, Brian Foley was a gentleman of profound beauty, with a heart of purest gold, and his spirit will blaze forever on in the hearts of all whose lives he enriched with his almighty presence. Dearest Brian, I will never forget you. Dearest Jean, Neil and Cara, no man could have greater pride than that which Brian must have felt in you every minute of every day, from the moment you entered his life.

I am thinking of you at all times and hope to be with you again when the time comes.

We were and are still so shocked at the passing of such a lovely man.
As neighbors and very good friends we know how devoted Jean and Brian were to each other and how they fitted together like a hand in a big warm Glove.
Jean we know how completely devastated you are at the departing of your soul mate Brian from this life to the next and we pray that God will give you, Neil and Cara strength.

My deepest sympathies to you all, Brian was such a kind, friendly and funny man, and a good friend. I will always think of him with fond memories when Ireland play rugby.

We were devastated  to lose  our Uncle Brian. Our deepest sympathies are with his wife  Jeanie, his children Cara and Neil and the extended family. He was always a stoic, gentle presence with a sparkle in his eye. When we think of our uncle, we will always think of his overwhelming kindness and generosity.  His sudden departure is a tremendous and shocking loss for this family.
