Brian was the brightest of colleagues, best of friends and a stalwart supporter of independent thinking. He championed those who bothered to get off their backsides which didn't always make him popular. Everywhere he went in his career, he brought energy, fresh thinking and turned the status quo upside down. I'm glad to have enjoyed his friendship, which always meant mighty fun and loyalty. Oh what a loss. A person with a twinkle in his eye, with energy to fill a room and a core belief in the value of journalism in society; the need to hold power to account and to dig for it. So sorry to hear of the passing of Brian. Thinking of his family at this sad time. I was most fortunate to be introduced to Brian over pint, then becoming a dear friend. He was kind, very knowledgeable & enjoyed a laugh yet from chatting and listening to stories over the past few days, he was very modest. To quote a song we sang once or twice

“We'll meet again
Don't know where
Don't know when
But I know we'll meet again some sunny day”

My heartfelt condolences to the Looney family. I, too, soldiered in the Academy Street trenches with this remarkable force of nature and looked and learned from my desk. Brian's dedication to journalism remained steadfast to the end. A news junkie, in the very best sense. It seems fitting to borrow Rupert Murdoch's philosophy. Brian knew like him that words, pictures, design and graphics must be brilliantly packaged to feed the mind and move the heart. Along the way Brian always stuck up for the unpopular, never the popular. Mission accomplished. Sleep peacefully old chum.
