A medical school classmate, I remember Brian well as someone who decided early to become a surgeon and dedicated his whole life to that most emotionally trying, physically demanding of professions. I recall him electing to study Last’s Textbook of anatomy, because “that’s what you need for FRCSI Part 1”. He was a stellar student and became a revered surgeon. The people of Kerry were fortunate to have his services for the past 25 years. He would have stood out in any surgical department in the country, not just for his skill, but for his kindness and humility, easy to lose in a notoriously competitive speciality. It was not in him to become cynical, despite the difficulty of working in an increasingly overstretched health service.
Brian had a great appetite for life, as well as work. He was a golfer for whom a day’s golf was not 18:holes, but 36, a round in the morning and a round in the afternoon. He took me around Carnoustie once, too tough a course for me, but he loved it. He loved company too and was such a popular classmate. He had a welcoming smile and was ready to laugh. One of the last times I saw him was during treatment when he was in Cork and despite all, he had his usual lovely welcoming smile.
A gentleman to his core, in the true meaning of the word, he stood out in a profession that contains many exceptional individuals as one of the best. He is a sore loss to all, most of all of course to his family and it is a tragedy to be taken too soon. God bless him.
