Bro. O Hare may you rest in peace.
Thanks for being such a great influence in my life.
Thanks for being such a great influence in my life.
I wish to extend my sincere condolences to the O'Hare family, his community in Celbridge & the Salesian Order on the passing of Bro. James.
It was with great sadness that I learned of the passing of Bro. James while I was in Germany. He was a man with exceptional business acumen and he had a tremendous interest and knowledge of plants. His love and knowledge for plants was infectious. I attended Warrenstown Horticultural College in the '70's as a student and worked there until it closed its doors for the last time in 2009, testament to the respect I had for Bro. James, for Warrenstown and for my interest and love of horticulture.
There was another side to Bro. James though, he was a very thoughtful and kind person. Prior to having transport of my own, I can remember he would regularly visit his mother in Co. Down and on the way he would swing round by Blackrock near Dundalk, drop me off at home and on his return give me a lift back to Warrenstown. It is the many generous acts like this that I will remember him for.

I was so sorry to learn of the death of Brother James. He gave great encouragement and advise to countless students and took an ongoing interest in their subsequent careers and was a father-like figure to many. He was also a mine of information and possessed a pleasant sense of humour.
I enjoyed many visits with him over the years since the closure of the college; be it in Warrenstown or Celbridge. Brother James also took an ongoing interest and concern in Horticultural/ Agricultural matters; one of the more recent being that of Ash Dieback.
Brother James had an innate interest in meteorology. He maintained the meteorological measuring station on a daily basis at Warrenstown since 1951. Measurements of rainfall and temperature were meticulously recorded each morning. In 2017, the Director of Met Éireann, Mr. Eoin Morgan acknowledged Brother James for his immense personal contribution to the national climate archive of Ireland. For his part Brother James explained that it was a basic tenant of the Salesian order to contribute to the community and to the country, but that his long association with Met Éireann had been very satisfying and enjoyable.
I will miss the visits to Brother James.
May God rest his gentle sole.

RIP Brother O'Hare. You were an inspirational Man and your knowledge of horticulture would be hard to beat. We had many a funny episode on our Friday afternoon practical's and I will always remember my years in Warrenstown.
I was a student under Brother O Hare from 1975 to 1977. My career led me to the Commercial Vegetable Seed trade which enabled me to keep in contact with him by supplying the college with vegetable seeds and I personally kept in touch with him. In the vegetable seed industry I got to meet some of the most experienced and highly qualified Horticulturist in the UK and Holland all because of Warrenstown .
I am privileged to say I was trained by one of the best.
May he rest in peace.

On behalf of my late husband, Michael Dempsey, I wish to offer my sincere condolences to Br. O’Hare’s family, the Salesian community and his friends. Michael admired Br. O’Hare greatly and visited him regularly in Warrenstown, then in Celbridge and had his last visit with him in Crumlin last July. Br. O’Hare honoured Michael by sending Fr. Hennessy to represent him by assisting at Michael’s funeral, which we appreciated greatly.
May he rest in peace.

My deepest sympathy to the O'Hare family and wider Salesian community on the passing of Brother O ‘ Hare. A lovely man with the best humour in Warrenstown. Rest in peace.
I had the greatest of life's fortunes to have met Br O'Hare in 1989 when after interviewing me I was signed up for the horticulture course.
He was a very astute man and it didn't take him long to spot that I was always up early having a smoke. He also noticed I was always having that last smoke at night. He had a job for me.
Depending on the time of year it was ventilating glass/polytunnels, turning on/off co2 burners or moving lights in the mushroom shed up beside top glass.
He would check up on you!
Especially when moving the lights on the rails for the early protected crop plants. But he was never shy of sticking his back in and helping you move them.
I am in a much different business these days but one which is very weather dependent. I visited him in Celbridge just prior to Covid and we spent the guts of 4 hours reminiscing and talking about various things but he kept driving the conversation back to the weather and the impact it has on my working day.
What I realised on the way home that evening was that Br James, even in his 91st year, had an insatiable quest for knowledge. A knowledge that he would never keep to himself!
His ethos was knowledge is there to be shared and he was mighty fine at sharing his.
If ever anybody was worthy to follow Don Bosco it was Br James.
Deepest Sympathy to Br James' relatives and his Salesian Family.
May he Rest in his well deserved Eternal Peace 🙏

Sincere sympathies to all the family & the Salesian community on the passing of Bro. O'Hare, a wonderful man. Forever grateful to Bro. James & all the wonderful staff that made Warrenstown a great place to have attended. At times he had to be a Lion Tamer for the untamed like myself, but he did so with all the ethos of Don Bosco & the Salesian order, teaching us knowledge, discipline & a work ethic, that helped guide us in later life. His passion & devotion for the job was second to none, even whizzing around section to section on his Chopper bike.

It was with great sadness to hear of the passing of Brother O'Hare. As a past horticultural student from 1985 to 1988 I look back at that time as one of the happiest and most influential in my life. My love of plants was nurtured by many evenings poring over books with Bro O'Hare in his library, time he gave so generously. His kindness to my parents is still remembered by them who were treated like royalty on any visits and travelled back home to Mayo with a car full of fresh vegetables and fruit courtesy of Bro O'Hare. I owe him everything, for his encouragement and guidance and carry his love of plants and horticulture with me forever. May his gentle soul rest in eternal peace.
