Even though Brother Maurice had officially retired from teaching before I started in Ballyfin , he was everywhere for us first years. He drove us in the minibus swimming, he organised weekend trips to the canal canoeing and we even did the Liffey descent in our home made canoes with a big picnic afterwards. The cylinder of gas and the big teapot were essential kit. Somehow he managed to fill a room with computers in late 80's so that we could learn how to use them and get a qualification.
If there was something that he didn't have, he could make it, or if he couldn't make it he could persuade someone to give it to him for the benefit of the students or the maintenance of the beauty of the estate.
Sincere condolences to the Murphy family and Patrician community on the passing of Brother Maurice, may he rest in peace.
Sincere Sympathy to Mary and all Bro Murphy's Family.
Even though we only met late in life we always enjoyed our conversations.

Thank you Bro Maurice for a great education and lots of happy times while boarding in Ballyfin College. Whether it was canoeing in the lake or bringing us racing on the Liffey, they are great memories I will always have. Spent lots of time in your workshop in Ballyfin and I still have the canoe you made for me, and of course its still works perfectly!

Rest in Peace to a great man.
Sincere sympathy to all the Patrician Community and to Bro Maurice's sister, Mary and all the family connections.
May Bro Maurice rest in peace
Sincere sympathy to Bro Maurice's sister, Mary, to all his family connections and to the
Patrician Community.
May Bro Maurice rest in peace
So sorry to hear of the passing of Bro. Maurice, my sincere sympathy to his sister Mary, the Murphy family and the Patrician Community.
Bro. Maurice gave me my first and only job in 1971. He was principal, school secretary, caretaker, maintenance man and builder. He expanded the curriculum and extra curricular activities for the students in the Academy. His office was his workshop where he was always engaged in some functional project for the school. The sound of his favourite classical/operatic pieces almost drowning out the noise of the power saw, router or welder. Needless to say, he would have been a safety and health officers nightmare.
He breezed around the school with skirt of his soutane flowing behind him embellished with a little sawdust, wood stain and of course welder scorch marks. His trademark to me ,were his blacksmith type hands, their skin and cracks discoloured from his workshop activities, his crooked "Sherlock Holmes" type pipe, the smell of tobacco, mugs of tea (tar) and his music. He was an excellent teacher with the education and welfare of the pupils of the Academy always his priority. He was a leader, he led from the front who got the staff to buy into his ideas and projects with ease.
May he Rest in Peace.
Bro Maurice was a great man, and I really enjoyed my time canoeing and heading off on the trips, we had such good fun. Sorry to learn of this sad news
Brother Maurice was my dear friend.

He was a fellow artist with an innate curiosity and mischievous sense of humour. Ever ready with practical solutions and the tools to carry them through. Always reliable with his word and supportive in his actions.

May he continue to light the way.

Sincere sympathy to his sister Mary, family and the Patrician Brothers
My sincere sympathies to the Murphy family and the Patrician Brothers Community of Br. Maurice. An inspiring and forward thinking Teacher who was eager to share and encourage his students, left a lasting impression with his enthusiasm, interesting stories and sayings, inside and outside the classroom in Mallow in the 1970s. May he rest in peace.
Always remembered as a most genial man and one of the worlds gentlemen. Loved by all of us who knew him. Slan go foil.
Fond memories of travelling to rugby and soccer matches in his acquired black Mariah which he treasured.
He loved his sport and gave endless time to sport and pupils.

He was a shining light among the religious community in the school and respected by everyone. Thank you Brother Maurice for your commitment and tireless work over the years. Rest in peace.
It was with great sadness that I learned of the death of Brother Maurice - a great teacher who was always willing to share his ideas. I am so grateful for his support when I began teaching science in Mallow. May he enjoy life to the full in heaven. My sympathy to his family & Patrician Community.
My headmaster in Mallow in the early 70s, he was a most extraordinary man of absolutely endless talent. He was ever true to his vocation and the welfare of his students. Armed with pipe tobacco and mug of tea, there was nothing that Brother Maurice couldn't achieve. He could crack the whip when necessary (fairly often in our class) but he was always, always approachable. God bless his patience! And God rest his good soul. Rest in peace Brud.

My condolensces to The Murphy Family & The Patrician Comunities. Some great memories of an insightful physics teacher who could speak ad naseum on any subject in Patrician Acad Mallow. As a swimming coach, probably couldn't swim himself; as an athletics coach and bus driver to events or matches. Post school years meeting at vintage shows and being entertained by him at Ballyfin listening to his yarns and drinking tea. May he rest in peace.
Brother Maurice used to drive the bus bringing us to our rugby matches in the 1970s. I always remember the encouragement he gave us and excitement and passion. He made a massive contribution to my confidence and self esteem. I think of him often. May he rest in peace.
We are deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Brother Maurice. Special memories of your time in Newbridge in the 60's/70's and your immense contribution to education. A trailblazer in the World of Science - beyond genius. It was a pleasure to have known him.

Sincere sympathy on the passing of a great man.
Bro. Maurice was a great teacher, and craftsman but above all else he was a kind, wonderful human being full of interest in, and love for his fellow man.
It was a privilege to have worked with him.
Very sorry to hear of Bro Maurice’s passing. He taught me in Ballyfin and like all his students he made a last impression on me. In particular, he gave his time and knowledge generously to all in the Ballyfin canoeing club. He made our canoes himself in the workshop and showed us how to repair cracks and holes we acquired on the lake! He brought us on bus trips to events like the Liffey Descent, loading up the school bus with picnics, and of course the tripod and burner from the science lab so we could make pots of tea! He made such an impact on all his students and some of the best school day memories.

Condolences to Brother Maurice's family and friends. As a student in Ballyfin in the 1980's, with fondness, I remember a man who was a force of nature, whose diverse interests outside such cerebral academic subjects as physics and maths included canoeing, photography, joinery, horticulture and mechanics. Each pastime resulting in a club, kept going, largely due to his generosity with his time, RIP Br Maurice.
Very sorry to hear of the death of Br Maurice RIP. He facilitated the girls from St Mary’s Secondary School here to attend his science classes. He was a wonderful teacher and they enjoyed the classical music he played during the practicals. My sincere sympathy to his sister Mary, the family, to Bro Cormac and the Patrician Community. May he Rest In Peace.
Brother Maurice was my friend for nearly 40 years, a gifted teacher who was always prepared to share ideas. on Physics . He also made bits of equipment out of all sorts of scrap material and so enjoyed when they worked. He gave me several of these treasures. Above all he had a genius for friendship and for including everyone. His workshop, mostly a hazard to enter, but was his pride and joy. He made some wonderful things including a harp lately. I have a clock he made which is much admired by all who see it. He was always fun to be with but was sensitive to the vulnerable and the marginalised among his pupils. He used to blow up huge capacitors out in the yard to entertain his leaving cert pupils. I was there once, terrified while he really enjoyed himself! we gave computer courses for teachers.. He fixed equipment and he and I helped the teachers to the then new world of computers. I visited him in .Ballyfin, Abbeyleis and in Newbridge and was so sorry not to see him this year. A true gentleman versatile in so many disciplines. Slan a chara . Ar Dheis De go bhfuil tu.
How does one begin to pay tribute to a man of the calibre of Br.
Maurice .
Maurice the gifted teacher , the extraordinary mechanic, the artist, the wood turner, the music lover, the environmentalist, the eternal student , the great champion of Ballyfin.....
He was all of the above and more but the man I want to remember is my great friend of many years .I had the pleasure of working with him in Ballyfin for 7 years . We worked on many projects together and it was through these projects that I saw the kind sensitive and gentle man who made boarding school a gentler and kinder place for many lonely boys. His workshop was a beacon for lads who who needed somewhere to go and above all someone to talk to. I often popped into the workshop , always a hive of activity with boys building canoes or turning wood or just simply talking to ‘Bro’r’.He was generous with his gifts and the boys learned new skills as they unburdened themselves and shared in his varied interests.
Maurice and I remained great friends and it was my privilege to visit him often and take him to Treacys on The Heath.
We could learn much from him and his life . No time was wasted , no talent untapped , always kind.
Rest in peace my dear friend . I am sure they have a workshop worthy of you in Heaven (maybe you will even keep it tidy).
My condolences to all his family and the wide circle of friends who mourn Br. Maurice Murphy.

It was with great sadness that I heard of the passing of my former Principal, Bro. Maurice, one of the most talented and gifted people I have been privileged to have known. He was an excellent Principal while teaching Science and Physics full-time. His "Black Mariah", pipe and cups of tea were legendary. Bro. I offer my condolences to Br. Maurice's family and the Patrician Brothers on his passing. Br. Maurice gave me my first position as a science teacher in the Patrician Academy Mallow. Throughout my career Maurice was exemplary in his love of science teaching and active membership of the ISTA. He is acknowledged as one of the great science teachers of Ireland. He was a wonderful Principal. Before any other school he extended the curriculum to include the group Cert, 4 year Inter Cert, GCSE and the Leaving Cert., career guidance as well as promoting GAA and Rugby. Recycling was started by Maurice - old TV sets, fridges etc. were taken apart and reused as Cathode Ray tubes etc. for his many innovative, exciting and spectacular demonstrations - safety and health were not issues then. As a Patrician Brother he dedicated his life to the youth of Ireland in all the schools he served making a special place helping and supporting the marginalised in society. Thank you Maurice for your friendship, your long and wonderful life with us. May you rest in peace.
May he Rest In Peace, a great man.
