Brother Donal (Donnie) Leader

Sending sympathy to Donal’s family, Noel, Breda, Greg, Tadhg & Darragh and to the Christian Brothers.

Donal and I studied together in Maynooth and also UCD. We were a small undergraduate class in Maynooth and Donal was a true ‘ Christian Brother’ to all of us. He was older than most who commenced first year and as we (young ones) struggled to understand new concepts, ideas and theological language Donal could provide a summary of a complicated lecture on an A4 page over a coffee. He offered encouragement and support and did so in a kindly way. Donal wore his learning lightly and always used his considerable skills and abilities to improve the world around him.

I was so sorry to hear of his death but am grateful that our paths in life crossed and will remember him with love and gratitude.
May his dear soul rest in peace and rise in glory.

It is with great sadness that I heard of the death of a wonderful human being. Donal passing is a great loss to his family,brothers in religion and his many friends. Leaba I measc na naomh.

It was with great sadness that i heard of his Passing and it is I know an immeasurable loss to the Congregation. Remembering you all at this sad time. May he rest in Peace.

Sincerest condolences to the Leader family and to the Christian Bothers on the death of dear Br. Donal. From early 2020 I had the privilege of working with Br. Donal on Ireland’s submission to the UPR process, my first time but for Donal this was a regular piece of work, on top of what was already a busy schedule. He was the consumate educator, encouraging, tutoring, mentoring, pointing out, parsing, critiquing and listening as we worked through this piece of work. And as we did this, we'd made a firm new friend zooming, planning, laughing, peer reading, reviewing, rewriting, drinking coffee and eating cake. We found new work when old work was done, deepening friendships over more coffee and cakes. Hospitality and good humour were two of Donal's most endearing qualities as they were used is great measure to invite us in, to allow us to participate and such was the man that he wore his talents, gifts, achievements and intelligence so easily. We are heartbroken over this news of Donal's death. Leaba i measc na Naomh go raibh aige. ❤️

Deepest sympathies to the extended Leader family and Christian Brothers on the loss of Donal. He inspired so many with his gentle presence, wisdom and experience. Donal continued to work with the Board of ERI up to recent times. We will greatly miss him.

I had the great privilege of working with Donal as we both commenced our teaching careers in the North Mon in the early seventies. He was deeply committed to our noble profession, always kind and caring, and he opened the windows of wonder for generations of pupils. He was always generous with his knowledge and advice and was so supportive and proud of his students in Marino.

It is with great sadness that we learned of the passing of Br Dónal Leader.
Dónal was director of MIE from 1992 to 2005, and as a dedicated teacher and teacher educator, he had a hugely positive influence on the lives of many people. As Director, he provided inspirational leadership, initiating the construction of the Nagle Rice Hall and the Student Accommodation. These tangible aspects of his legacy contribute to providing a vibrant campus for our students each day.

I was shocked and saddened to hear of Dónal's death.
He was always such a warm, thoughtful and benign presence. I still remember his wise and enormously helpful advice to me when I was a young Principal at CBC Monkstown many years ago.
He is surely in Heaven now

I am deeply saddened by the loss of Donal. He was president of Marino Institute of Education when I began working here and I developed a friendship with him in subsequent years through the Edmund Rice Network. I experienced him as a great mentor and friend who was always excited about learning and new challenges. He gave such dedication to everything he put his mind to and loved a challenge! I experienced him as loyal and a brother traveller on the journey.
