Canon John taught me Irish in St. Pat's in the early 1970s, a very good, fair teacher with a droll sense of humour. Since then I have known him as a very energetic, open and compassionate priest, quietly going about doing great work, in the various parishes to which he was sent. It was obvious from the beautiful requiem Mass, (a tribute to his love of Irish and Latin) how much he was dearly loved by his family, but especially by his nieces, nephews and grandnieces and grandnephews. Sincere sympathy to Maureen and Kathleen and to Paddy as well as to his fellow Kilmore priests.

Bailieborough was truly blessed to have Fr. Murphy as parish priest. He took an active role in all aspects of the town and had a genuine interest in his parishioners; young and old. Fr. Murphy would often visit the schools in the parish. In the late 90’s, I remember his visits as a pupil. In 2010, he was still on his rounds visiting the schools of the parish, and I was a new teacher, beginning her career. Regardless of my age or status, I always felt that Fr. Murphy treated me the same; a testament to his character. Fr. Murphy had a wonderful sense of humour, gave the best advice, listened sincerely, laughed often and touched the lives of many. I hope he knew how much he meant to us.
