I was so deeply sorry to hear of the tragic passing of Gilbert. There are simply no words that can ease the pain of losing a son and brother. Please know that you are in my thoughts and prayers during this heartbreaking time. May you find strength in one another and comfort in the love that surrounds you.
I was very saddened to hear of the tragic death of Captain Muldowney. I did not know him personally but reading the accounts of his life that have been shared, he seems to have been an extraordinary person who lived life to the full and brought joy to many people's lives. I arranged for a motion of tribute to be tabled in the House of Commons (https://edm.parliament.uk/early-day-motion/65204) and have also arranged for a month's mind Mass to be celebrated in Dublin at St. Kevin's Church, Harrington Street, at 8am on 26 February. I hope that these small gestures of tribute go some small way to relieving your terrible grief at the loss of such a wonderful officer and gentleman. May he rest in peace and rise in glory.
I had the pleasure of knowing Gilbert well. He was an impeccable character, well-loved and admired by all who knew or worked with him. His sudden passing is a hammer blow. A good man, lost too early.
We served together at 3RHA, and while there we planned an Adventure Training expedition to Jordan, where we and a group of others hiked from Petra to the Red Sea. Across those two weeks, I got to know Gilbert well, and I cannot help but smile when I think back to his escapades. He was a rare character; a man of sound principles, ever dependable and stalwart.
My dearest hope is that, much like the end of our adventure to Jordan; that wherever he now treads, his steps have taken him to clear water, and warm sands.
My deepest condolences.

To Gilbert's family and friends during such a difficult time. I had the pleasure of serving with Gilbert out in Estonia and immediately recognised his caring and hard working nature which made him so popular with everyone he worked with. His incredible sense of humour, especially in hard times, and enthusiasm was infectious which impacted those around him in such a positive way. He will be missed by all and my thoughts go out to his family and closest friends, the loss will never heal but his time was so impactful and sincere to everyone he met, he will never be forgotten.
Dear Family of Gilbert,
I did not know your son. I'm from Riverstown in Sligo. As a 17 year old I had my heart broken when colour blindness stopped me from a Cadetship in the Irish Army. At the time all i wanted to do was head on over for AOSB in the British Army, but i was made to feel that would cause problems. I lived my whole young life regretting that.
Serving in the British Army as an Irishman is one and the same as protecting Ireland.
I wish i had Gilberts bravery as my younger self. I found it later in life and recently passed AOSB and will be going to Sandhurst to commission as a Reserve Infantry Officer. If i am successful at Sandhurst i will dedicate that success to Gilbert and every other young Irishman who passed through those halls with the sense of purpose that Gilbert no doubt had.
I can't fathom your pain, but know that many are deeply touched by your sons life. I wish i had met him.
Best regards,
Conor

Gilbert was the type of officer and friend you hope for. Fiercely loyal, phenomenally good fun and a true professional. Whenever we exchange stories in the mess about our junior officer antics, a few always immediately come to mind—and they almost always involve Gilbert. He was exceptional at getting us all into trouble, but even better at getting us out of it. He was a true character and a great friend, and he will be sorely missed by all of us who were lucky enough to serve with him.
My deepest condolences to his family, friends and those he was serving with at 4RA.

Sincere sympathy to Muldowney family on the young and sad death of Gilbert R.I.P .
I cannot begin to understand the sorrow that your hearts must be feeling right now. I am so sorry for your loss.
Gilbert was a great friend and I have no doubt he was a wonderful son and brother. He brought joy and laughter wherever he went. The world is a better place because he lived in it.
I pray that you receive peace from knowing the fact that Gilbert is walking with our LORD in Paradise.
The military has an expression, ‘There are no atheists in foxholes’. It is through our trials and suffering that we are brought closer to Jesus. I know that through his life and now his death, Gilbert has shared the Good News with all who knew him.
While I know nothing I can say will ease your pain, I would just like finish by reminding you of Jesus’ promise:
“Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted”.
Yours in Christ,
Peter
