Mary and family, our thoughts and prayers are with you all at this difficult time. Sean was a gentleman, may he rest in peace.
Sean was a lovely man and a good friend. He had that wonderful presence, deep and strong voice yet gentle in delivery. I will remember him for his many qualities, good judgement, reliability, humour, his smile, charm and most of all his friendship.
We first met in Dartmouth some 47 years ago. We kept in touch whilst in the Navy and when I left after a short service commission, meeting up when our paths crossed. Always keeping in touch even when taking different routes in life. I followed with interest his career in the RN and know how much he enjoyed being Naval Attache in Rome, what a wonderful job.
More latterly as parents at the RHS and remember him taking the salute on parade.
Krystyna and I extend all our love and condolences to Mary and to Matthew, Conor and Alexander, please be in no doubt as to how much your father was held in our friendship and esteem. We will miss him greatly.

Mary, I am so very sorry to hear this sad news. Sean was an absolute trooper. I am thinking of you all at this difficult time.
Dear Sean,
I am writing to thank you for being the best father in law a girl could have. Always armed with flowers, a bottle of gin and wearing the biggest smile. You and Mary welcomed my family and I so warmly into yours, something we all cherish and will never forget. I will miss your laugh, naughty sense of humour and warmth.
Despite the cruel hand you were dealt, you inspired me and so many with your continued zest for life and bravery.
I would like to present my deepest sympathies to Mary, Matt, Alex and Conor, whom have been exemplary during these tough times, making you proud organising the most fitting celebration of life, to the most remarkable and courageous man.
Rest in peace, no need to fight anymore love, Tham xxx

Oh Mary! We are so sad to hear that Sean has passed. What heartbreak for you and the boys. We still tell Sean and Mary stories to friends when we are reminiscing about Rome! We remember you both with fondness and were so grateful for your hospitality and friendship.
Fred and I send our love and much strength to you and your sons.

I am so pleased to have had the opportunity to catch up with Sean a few weeks ago. He was still as cheerful as ever, with a personality that shone through brightly and immediately captured ones attention, despite the rigours of fighting his condition over many years. I shall remember, with very fond memories, our time working together as Squadron Bosses in the mid 90s. Rest in peace my dear friend, you’ve attended your last ‘shareholders’
So sorry to hear this news. Sean was an exceptional individual, a great loss. Condolences to all the family.
Dear Mary, I worked with Sean in Saudi and I'm so sorry to learn of his passing. May I offer my deepest condolences to you and your family.
Mary, Matthew, Conor & Alex, we will all miss Sean so much as his brother in law for over 25 years we had a great friendship, had numerous family and social gatherings, an evening in Sean and Mary’s company was always entertaining and fun. With his roots at both sides of the Irish Sea he had a great sense of place and has stayed connected even though a large part of his life has been overseas. The way he dealt with his illness was an inspiration how he found time to do the normal things , home, diy, travel and give up his spare time to help others through his work with rotary int. As an avid reader his bookshelves were always full of interesting subjects, as a wine connoisseur his cellar was always nearly full of the best claret and right up to his death his heart was full of a zest for life that never diminished. Sean has left an impression on us all that we will miss dearly .
Dear Mary and family, Sean and I passed out from Dartmouth in 1978 and through various warfare courses our paths continued to cross thereafter. His presence literally filled any room and he loved nothing more than to share a glass and a story or two on the very rare times we managed to catch up. My thoughts and prayers are with you all at this time.
Dear Mary sincere condolences to you and your family - May Sean Rest in Peace - MR and family x
Dear Mary, Matthew, Conor and Alex
I was shocked and saddened to hear of Sean’s passing. My thoughts and prayers are with you all at this sad time.
Sean was a great friend and neighbour in Dorchester, Dorset many years ago, but the happy times and memories spent with Sean will always be remembered. He was a larger than life character, full of warmth and humour. We enjoyed visiting you in Rome, the 4 of us sitting down to lunch at that enormous dining table was memorable. RIP Seán.

Mary, Conor and the rest of Sean's family I am shocked and greatly saddened by the news of Sean's passing. We had dinner in his Club earlier in the year and he was on top form and responding well to his new treatment. He was looking better than I had seen him in years. Despite all his medical problems he never lost his sense of humour. He was hilarious company. Over a period of more than 20 years we spent great days and fun evenings together in London, Singapore and Beijing. I always looked forward to our time together and am deeply saddened that they will not be repeated. Good people are missed and Sean will be missed greatly. My love and condolences. Sincerely, Steven

Oh Mary, we were so sorry to read this very sad news. Sean was such a larger than life character, it is hard to think he’s gone. We’ll never forget his kindness and wicked sense of humour, which never over-shadowed his professionalism at work. I must say - he deserved that 1 Star. We often look back on our time in Saudi and Sean always comes up as he played such a big part during our time there. We will always be grateful for the warmth and hospitality you both showed us all, in Saudi and afterwards. His attitude to his illness was truly inspirational, and if ever there was someone who personified the term ‘Glass half full’ it was Sean. You are all in our thoughts at this very sad time Mary and family. Sending all our love. Richie, Sandra and Grace
It was a great shock to hear of Sean’s passing. We have wonderful memories of our time in Brunssum (NL). A giant of a man with a wonderful disposition and engaging and mischievous spirit. Our deepest condolences to you Mary and the family. Sending you our love and prayers. D & C x
RIP Sean, a huge presence professionally and socially, and always willing to offer sage advice... And he was invariably right! Condolences to Mary and family.
Fond memories of Sean in Blake Division, and although it’s 46 years ago, I will always remember that he was head and shoulders above the rest of us ‘ Midshipmites’, in every sense.
My sincere condolences,
RIP Sean.
My sincere condolences,
RIP Sean.
I joined the RN with Sean in 1977. He was a good man in every respect.
Such a loss. Sincere condolences to Mary and the family. We joined Blake Division together in 1977 and although our careers diverged after that, we remained in touch. I was lucky enough to have seen him again a few weeks ago, for one last time. With Sean there was never, ever, a dull moment. RIP.
I fondly remember Sean leading me astray when I was a Midshipman in BRILLIANT. He was one of the most colourful and fun characters I got to serve with. With my heartfelt condolences to his family.
Dear Mary, we were working on our family tree (Wicklow / Wexford / Carlow) last week and thinking of you and Sean. As I was born in Carlow, the link with your family bakery there is a link to cherish. Our memories of time with you and Sean in Riyadh are entirely positive, and you both did much to maintain morale in what were often challenging circumstances. I had enormous respect for Sean, both professionally and as a person of integrity. His humour and good nature will live with me forever, and you and the family are in our thoughts and prayers. With our love and sincere condolences.

So very sorry to hear of Sean’s passing… as a young, gullible 3/O WRNS Staff Officer I was often teased mercilessly by Sean but always with warm humour. He will be much missed by his loving family and loyal friends.
Seán was just such a great person and dear friend. From our first meeting on ACSC2 through NATO appointments and our three fantastic years sharing a flat in London. Family laughs on European adventures and later in Eire all make up the bank of happy memories for clan SW. Our heartfelt condolences to Mary, Alex, Conor and Matthew. RIP ‘big man’. Anne, John, Kat and Ross.
Sean was indeed one of life’s vital forces - stories he used to tell still reverberate in my memory. Mary and family Jules and I are so sorry to hear of your devastating news. Please accept our deepest condolences.
So sorry to hear this sad news. I worked for Sean in Saudi and thoroughly enjoyed attending the meetings he chaired, although I don’t think the Saudies did! He passed a lot of info to me when my father was diagnosed with the same multiple myeloma exactly 3 years ago. My deepest sympathy to all of Sean’s family and may he finally rest in peace.
An oasis in the desert! A friendship forged in a desert that went on to flood our lives with laughter and fun (and copious amounts of wine!) - oh how we will miss your huge presence and booming laughter. Fair winds Captain xx
Such sad news and after such a long and spirited battle which was typical of his indomitable spirit. A great friend and colleague who travelled from Ireland to Wales to support my family at our son, Matthew’s, funeral. An incredible sense of humour coupled with a strong mission spirit. Our lives were made richer through knowing Sean. Deepest sympathies to Mary, Matt, Alex and Conor ❤️
Sorry to read this sad news. Thoughts are with Mary and family. Once met, Sean was never forgotten. Generous to the core. RIP.
Very sorry to hear of this. My sincere condolences to Captain Sean Steed’s family, upon losing a great individual, truly an officer and a gentleman.
I still vividly remember his larger than life character, his towering personality, but most of all, his fantastic dry sense of humour, even as he was stoically undergoing treatment for his life changing diagnosis. He certainly livened up my clinic consultations.
Most of all, upon first presentation, I recall earning his trust and his proffering of sincere gratitude, for convincing him to persist with his long list of investigations, that he had initially felt so unnecessary.
RIP Sean.

There are few people of whom I can say, "He was the best of us". Sean was certainly one. He was a great friend at Dartmouth and as we became pilots together. Throughout our careers he was as amazed as I was at my success! He was a "big man" in every sense. A joy to share a glass with and thanks to Mary his later years of struggle were glass half full. We had a wonderful visit to Wicklow and both drank too much red wine. He was a wonderful man and I'm in tears as I write this. Rest in peace dear Sean.
Sean’s passing is a truly sad occasion. A big man, sometimes gruff, but always with a big heart, he was truly one of the “characters” in the Royal Navy. A highly professional airman and warfare officer, his career spanned the whole panoply of naval life. My thoughts are with Mary and his loving family. Fair winds and following seas.
