I am so sorry to hear of Carl's passing.
I was always pleased to have Carl as a friend and thought fondly of him for the past twenty years, or so, since we met.
I was enquiring about him today, thinking we might meet, when I found out the terrible news.
I will miss bumping into him and our fond exchanges.
